thinking maybe of getting a teleconverter in the future is there one that fits all lens or are they all different?. are there any draw backs in using them thinking mainly for my 70-200 f2.8.

I stand to be corrected but I think the canon 1.4x don't fit as many lenses as the Kenko 1.4x.
IQ wise I have had both the Canon and Kenko 1.4x and can honestly say that for the difference in price the Kenko is by far the better value tc.

most, if not all teleconvertors won't support EF-S lenses, with you having a 5D on the way i assume you don't have these anyway so you just need a C-AF fit one.

If you go for a 1.4x TC you will lose 1 stop on your lenses and if you go for a 2x tc you wil lose 2 stops on your lenses.

Rick,

I'll be passing your way next week...I can drop you off a selection for you to try...Canon 1.4x and 2x, Kenko 1.4x and Sigma 2x.
I'll be in touch nearer the time.

That was over three weeks ago....you expect me to remember!
It's possible although I suspect it may have been tubes or the Life size Converter.

It's the short term memory that goes first.

If you use the 1.4 converter you'll still have AF on the 70-200 f2.8. Most comments I've seen give the 1.4 the OK but not so the 2x. I use my 1.4 x on the 100-400. Results are OK but you have to focus manually.

The 2x will still give AF on a f/2.8...not so on your 100-400/4.5-5.6 though...unless you tape the pins and suffer a bit of focus hunting.

Tried tapping the pins, but the focus became to erratic. I decided to go back to manual focusing. Is it becoming a lost art?

Sigma quotes that a F2.8 70-200 with a teleconverter will end up at F5.6

TCs also increase vignetting, distortion, flare, chromatic aberration (purple fringeing), and they soften focus. I.o.w. TCs destroy whatever image quality your lens is capable of.

I can agree with most of that. Never used them on a digital camera yet- except to prove that they can soften up your image the same as they did with film. Only use TC's if you're desperate- you might 'digital zoom' is as good!

I'm a little puzzled by how vignetting or flare is increased?

Which body/lens combination did you use for the comparison against digital zoom (I assume you mean post processed zoom).

On the 70-200 Canon, I've found a 1.4 causes little degradation of image quality but the 2x causes it to suffer. On the 500mm, I'm happy to use either and they both give stunning results.
