Teleconverter Question

I have just bought a Kenko 2x Teleconverter and have just mounted it to my camera with the Canon 70-200mm f/4.0. The camera still reports as f/4.0. Which is good because this allows me to still use autofocus. But my question is, is it really f/4.0 or is it f/8. Just need to know when setting my aperture if I need to mentally add 2 extra stops or is iot just a case that I lose 2 stops of light but the aperture is still f/4.
 
It's really f/8 but the metering will be based on what it sees not what it thinks.

Thanks bob. So for example when i do landscapes I usually set about f8. With the converter I would set f/4.
 
Cool. I am actually amazed at how well it focuses with the 2x on. I was expecting to only be able to use manual focus.

You need to be careful when it's duller or less contrasty. Don't let the AF hunt too much or you'll risk frying the motor. The motor's design duty cycle (moving v stationary) will be quite low and excessive hunting will result in a heat build up.

Actually I only intend using in this configuration when I have a lot of light. But from my short tests it seems to focus very quickly.
