Does anyone know whether a Sigma 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 APO DG Macro is compatible with a Canon 2x Extender? I know it's not officially compatible, but has anyone tried it? If you haven't tried it but you do own the Sigma, could you let me know whether the rearmost element is recessed sufficiently deeply for an Extender to fit? (The Extender will protrude about 8-10mm into the lens.)

Thanks folk.

no, the front element of the TC will hit the rear element of the lens in certain zoom positions.

There is a kenko one which will work, but you will lose light and your autofocus will struggle to lock on.

Thanks trip. The enquiry was on behalf of a customer who wanted to hire the Extender to fit his Sigma tele. Looks like I'll be advising him not to...

To piggy back this rather than a new thread.I`ve searched on here and elsewhere and have gathered conflicting evidence on my question. The question is, can I get a teleconverter that would work on a Nikon 80-400.Ken Rockwell says no Nikon ones will work, some on here say that kenko ones will.Is there a definate answer to this question please?

I'm not a Nikon expert, but I did find this Nikon teleconverter compatibility chart on a Nikon forum.

If I understand correctly, the full designation of your lens is Nikon 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D AF VR. The key bit seems to be that it's "AF", rather than "AF-S" or "AF-I". So the table suggests that all the current Nikon teleconverters, which are AF-S, won't fit; but the older manual-focus Nikon teleconverters, plus the 3rd-party ones (Kenko, Sigma, Tamron, Tokina) should fit and give you manual-focus capability.

Thanks Stewart, I have seen that and read it, I was unsure as to its meaning being a novice and all. Guess i`m better just getting closer to stuff in the first instance and leaving the tc`s alone......:)
