Teleconverter advice please.

I have a Nikon 400mm f2.8VR II and use it for wildlife and have a 1.4x TC but would like to get the 2x TC for that extra reach for small birds etc...

Assuming the light conditions are good enough do you think it's going to work ok.

Presume that's 2.8 Phil.

A mate has the same & uses the 2X TC with no problems & good results. (the newest 111 btw, not the 11 which he tried & didn't rate so much)

When I had a 300 2.8 I used the 1.7TC to good effect.

The 2x TC mkIII worked very well for me on a Nikon 300 f2.8 vr1 so I can't see why the 400 f2.8 would not be the same. Definitely go with the mkIII and not the mkII.

I use the 400/2.8 w/ the 2x extensively. IMO the 2.0 III produces results equal/better to the 1.7 II which I never use any more.

But the truth is, nothing makes as big of a difference than getting close(r) does...
