I bought a D40 (with 18-55mm) a few weeks ago and am very happy with it. For my birthday last week my wife bought me tickets for the Goodwood Festival of Speed. So got to thinking about a longer lens for this. In the short time I've had to consider I've narrowed the choice to Sigma 70-300 APO (in built motor) and a Nikon 70-300VR. Will these be too long. I don't know the layout of Goodwood so don't know distances involved.
I'm also haven't made my mind up whether to spend the extra on the Nikon. I want to shoot motorsport at my local track and also some wildlife. Will I get the benefit of the VR feature if I'm shooting speeds over 1/125th. I shall be in London on Saturday and could pick up a Sigma from Microglobe at a good price, but keep getting restless nights about the Nikon (which I tried out yesterday..no one here seems to have the motorised Sigma).
Or else take my time deciding and use my 28-105 (50-150ish on the D40) zoom which came with my F80 and focus manually.
