Yes
i7-2600k/Asus P67 Mobo/16Gb 1600MHz RAM/90G OCZ Vertex 2 SSD/1T Spinpoint + all the bits to build it (minus case/power supply which I already have). Going to see if I can get around 4.5GHz out of it so it should pretty much destroy anything but the biggest Xeon based server for performance. Will also be adding a second SSD next month as scratch space so LR/PS should run like something off a shovel ;) All for £850 delivered...

I can see what I'll be doing Friday evening :D

That looks quite capable ;)

I hope you have a monitor to match

You could have had a Mac for that.

No you can't

An iMac i3 21.3" costs £1020, same as a MacBook Pro 13" Aluminium unibody

good luck with the build, 4GHz+ should be easy on that

2600k, 4c8t of goodness. 4.5Ghz is easy with these. Been seeing 4.8Ghz 24/7 on all of the systems I've built.

I have 2 SSDs raided together in RAID0, absolutely flies !!

SandyBridge is tempting but I think I'll wait for Ivyridge to come along.

I'm upgrading from an E8400 at 3GHz... Hoping for a bit of a bump in speed... <cough>

may I ask why?

the E8400 is a very good processor, although it is multiplier locked at 9x, I still managed to achieve 4GHz, apart from getting a higher score on 3Dmark and WEI, you don't really notice that much difference.

That being said though if you want newer hardware, that supports USB3 and DDR3 memory, go for the upgrade

I'm getting annoyed at the speed my current machine runs at when LR/PS are on there so I figure 2 cores -> 4cores (I'm dubious as to whether the hyperthreading will make any difference), faster memory subsystem, and easyish overclocking - I run passively cooled (well, there are 2 case fans close to the Scythe Ninja heatsink) on the E8400 and want to try getting as close to passive on the i7.

Oh.. and because I need one ;) :D

Dual screen is a great way to go - 3360 x 1050 is a nice desktop space. -

I have thought about going twin screen, but I'm holding out for the 27" 2560x1440 form factor to become more affordable.
Can't quite fit 2 x 27" monitors on my desk.. The 2 x 24" fit - just ;)

I prefer the dot pitch that 27" 2560x1440 offers as it's nearer to the dot pitch of my existing 21.5" 1920x1080 screen.

The workstations at work have 24" 1920x1200 and each pixel is a bit larger so slightly less resolution per square inch of screen.

The good thing about single screen is there is no break in the middle of your workspace so good for viewing high res pictures as large as poss.

May I ask where you ordered from? I'm speccing up something very similar and it's coming up at quite a bit more than that.

ebuyer.com. Doesn't include case/power supply/OS as I'm reusing those from my current build. This is what I ordered (with stock codes for ebuyer).

1 x Samsung SH-S223 22x DVD±RW DL & RAM SATA Optical: 145450
1 x OCZ 90GB Vertex 2 SSD 3.5" SATA-II: 236493
1 x Scythe SCNJ-3000 Ninja 3 Cooler: 239821
1 x Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint F3 1TB : 173804
4 x Corsair 4GB DDR3 1600mhz Vengeance Memory: 248767
3 x Plexus 60cm Red SATA with Latch connection: 244327
1 x Asus P8P67 Socket 1155 USB 3.0 Bluetooth: 248960
2 x Xilence Red Wing 120mm Quiet Fan - 3&4pin connection: 138586

Total cost £570 inc next day del. Ebuyer don't have the 2600k in stock (expected del: 28/Jan).

I bought the processor from overclock.co.uk at £276 inc next day, as they were the only ones I could find in stock at a reasonable price (and they only had 2 remaining). CCL were cheaper and saying on Weds evening that 10 would turn up yesterday. They did eventually turn up yesterday and are cheaper than overclock by around £10 but I'd already ordered. Link for the processor at CCL: http://www.cclonline.com/product-in..._id=1258&manufacturer_id=0&tid=bx80623i72600k

BTW: I know the "performance" SSD is the Crucial C300, but be aware that the 64Gb one is significantly slower than its larger brothers. The Vertex 2 is a better drive than the 64G C300 even although peak performance is lower....

I'm still in 2 minds whether I should have saved £100 and gone for the i5-2500k. I'm totally NOT convinced the 2600K is worth the difference but I just know my mind would have been "if only you'd have bought...."

Should all be delivered today :D

HTH...

once you go twin screens you dont go back, much easier workflow with multiple items open.

i feel like one of my arms has been chopped off if i use 1 screen now.
:agree: Add to that a handful of virtual desktops (I use VirtuaWin) as I need some screen real estate to have somewhere to put the 50+ windows I normally have open :D

just remember to run a WEI once chipset drivers are on to activate the SSD settings in W7 :)
First time I've heard you need to actually run a WEI to activate. As I'm reusing my graphics card, I know my WEI will be 5.4 (passive 9500GT - don't game at all...) :D

and remember to set your bios to AHCI.
Yup... On my list :)

Will report back on the photoshop speed test (http://clubofone.com/speedtest/), but my current rig does it in around 28 seconds.

yeah OCZ list it in their forum guides as a step.

when you run the test it finds the SSD and turns off defrag, adjusts registry entries etc

So it does - thanks Neil. Just reading through that forum now...

I did like the comment:

OCZ Forum said:
Simple Dont's:
Don't install your SSD in an overclocked rig.

Ahahahahaha

Box of bits has arrived from ebuyer. Just waiting for the processor to arrive (RMSD).

We demand pictures! Component porn now!
There's always one ;)

I know this is a photography forum but no comments allowed about the quality of the photo :p

i do like the scythe coolers.. i used to run a "mini" ninja passive in my old HTPC. was a beast.
Me too. I have one on my E8400 which keeps the processor below 50 even when fully loaded for an hour.

rather depressingly my core2quad 2.83, 8gb, SSD box does it in 22s.
Sounds about right. Stock i7-2600k is 11.3 :D

Look (from Anandtech page here in case it doesn't load: http://www.anandtech.com/show/4083/...core-i7-2600k-i5-2500k-core-i3-2100-tested/15):

thats not too bad then.. damn i might have to upgrade sooner than i planned then :naughty:
PS/LR is the reason I used to justify the upgrade. Will keep you posted...

Not sure they're much faster... The fastest run I've seen quoted (on the Mac forum with people with mac pros) was from a guy with an overclocked windows machine. His was sub 10 seconds. Have a look at this: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=200558&page=37 (and back a few pages) which shows even a fairly high end dual xeon mac pro is only "as fast" as a stock i7...

Or not - same performance as a mac pro for 1/4 the cost ;) :D
