Hi all,

This is a bit of a follow on from a previous post - but i thought I'd start a new thread so I don't confuse myself!!!

Currently looking to setup a dedicated photoblog using Pixelpost. I have downloaded pixelpost and read all instructions. I am very keen to host the blog myself using my NTL / Virgin media broadband account.

However, in order to do this, I have to setup a database (SQL?) thing on there and require passwords / config access.

I have no idea whatsoever what these are or how to get them.

Could anyone please offer me some advice so that I can get started on uploading this thing.

As stated - the details that i need are for Virgin / NTL and they are to go in the fields .....

· Name of the database-host

· Username of the database

· Password of the database

· Name of the database

Any help would be very much appreciated - google is turning up nothing and I am getting very confused (it dfoesn't take much).

Thanks again in advance.

Anth

Firstly, are you talking about hosting from a home machine? This would need to be running 24/7 for starters. Secondly I'd check the T&Cs for your Virgin account, you may not technically be allowed to host a website on your connection. Unless you're generating a large volume of traffic they're unlikely to notice but it's worth bearing in mind.

There are a number of other questions to be answered but I'll get on to those later.

ISPs often give you a few token mb's worth of space on a server for a website, not that great tbh as most modern image related sites require mysql which ISPs don't give you. I use qiq who give you 10gigs (!) and unlimited email addresses and my sql accounts, great technical help...£19.99 a year, bargain!

Hi again and thanks!!!

This is an even steeper learning curve than Photoshop!!!

Anyway, an update ... you're right about Virgin Medis not allowing mysql. However, I have managed to get some bandwidth - for free - from www.zendurl.com.

I have set the .php stuff up and created a data base. However, when I then try to access the files and run the installation procedure I get an error message that says :--

Warning: require() [function.require]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(../includes/pixelpost.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (.:/tmp:/home/zendurl/public_html/t/thefirewall/:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/home/zendurl/public_html/m/marc25v/thecr:/home/zendurl/public_html/thefirewall/) in /home/zendurl/public_html/a/ascphoto/pixelpost_v1.6.0/admin/install.php on line 6

Warning: require(../includes/pixelpost.php) [function.require]: failed to open stream: Operation not permitted in /home/zendurl/public_html/a/ascphoto/pixelpost_v1.6.0/admin/install.php on line 6

Fatal error: require() [function.require]: Failed opening required '../includes/pixelpost.php' (include_path='.:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php') in /home/zendurl/public_html/a/ascphoto/pixelpost_v1.6.0/admin/install.php on line 6

Does anyone have any further advice? Is this my problem or are their servers not allowing it?

Thanks again in advance.

File(../includes/pixelpost.php) is not within the allowed path(s): (.:/tmp:/home/zendurl/public_html/t/thefirewall/:/usr/lib/php:/usr/local/lib/php:/home/zendurl/public_html/m/marc25v/thecr:/home/zendurl/public_html/thefirewall/)
The above line is the root problem but it's tricky to tell from your post what the exact error is. It's either a permissions or a path problem.

Is this a web based install or do you have shell access to a command line on the server itself?

When you FTP'd the files up which folder did you FTP them to?

When I open an FTP browser on my 34sp account there are quite a few directories shown initially, but I have to navigate into "htdocs" and then upload stuff to there. Is there something similar on your account?

Get in!! Cracked it.

The problem was with the server I was using not giving me full permissions.

I am now up and running PIxelpost successfully on freehostia.com.

I shall link to the blog once everything is working and images uploaded.

Thank you all for you help.

Hi again everyone - still going ......

Well, I thought I had this one boxed off, but it appears I am still having technical problems.

This is where we are at now.

Pixelpost - installled and running fine.

I have managed to log into the admin part of it and even upload some images .... BUT,

when I access the blog via the internet (or other people do) ... using the URL
http://ajbphotos.freehostia.com/pixelpost_v1.6.0/

I get the error message saying there is nothing there. Even though I have uploaded / published and can see them via my admin panel and also in the correct directory (images) through FTP.

Can anyone offer me any advice as to where I am going wrong?

Also, I did seem to have it working on my local machine before, BUT, even then i could not see any thumbnails.

I have permissions (777) to write to both images and thumbnails directories so i know it's not that.

Any help muchly appreciated.

Cheers.

Anth.

Hmm that's the message you get when you've either not uploaded anything, or you've set the images to show at some point in the future. When you're logged into the admin panel and on the images page, what happens when you click "preview" next to the blog entry?

The preview button works fine - shows the images.

I have also set to publish instantly so that they should come straight on.

tried on 2 diff comps on 2 diff networks, and both show the images in the admin section.

This is confusing!!!!

I am happy to give you password if you want to get in and have a look for me?

Thanks a lot!

Hi everyone and thanks a lot for all your help.

I've had a good battle with this over the last few days and finally managed to get something that I am pleased with.

It's still in the beta stages but have a little look and tell me what you think
