Hi Togs,

I have a PC with Windows 7 Ultimate, a Laptop with XP Professional that will link to the PC and wireless control it, but a recent change from before W7 and the new PC was connected, I still had all controls visible on my PC, but now I don't.

Now the linked laptop cuts off the PC desktop and reverts the PC desktop to the log on screen. :bang:

With my Canon 7D camera, I have EOS Utility on both the PC and the laptop and can shoot tethered using the laptop, or tethered using the PC.

What I would like to do is to set up the tethered laptop in one room, say aimed at the bird feeder, have the control also on the PC in my office, so that I can monitor what's going on through the lens and 'push the button' in my office if the shot looks good.

Any technical geniuses around that can help please, or make a suggestion ......... one that is polite I hope?:help:

i not sure but if remote access through windows was used you shuold be able to control the laptop from your pc. I`m not sure if this would work but it may be worth looking into

There's a good one called teamviewer. Think it is free for personal use. It gives you total control of the other computer.
 
Hi Neil,

I'm not sure what the program is, but a friend of my son's set it up for me some time ago, before I changed my PC and updated it with a new one with W7 Ultimate. I often control the PC from my laptop whilst sitting in the lounge, so no problems there.

The EOS Utility works a treat to tether the 7D camera either from the PC , or from the Laptop, but this additional idea was something I would like to do if possible. I have e-mailed my son's friend to see if he can help, but I thought I would ask the question on this computer section as TP has been so helpful so far in the photographic areas.

Perhaps someone with more IT knowledge will come along soon .............. it's a challenge, but would be great to have the facility. If I hear more I will let you know, as it may be something that others may find helpful, but keep watching in case someone on this site comes up with the answer

Difficult to fix your specific problem without more detail, but you should be able to connect from one PC to the other using remote desktop: Go to start/run (XP) or use the menu search and type

Code: 
rdp /v:<ip address of the remote pc>

You should then see a screen to log in to the remote PC. I've only ever used this from XP, not W7 but I don't think it's changed. It does depend, however, on your security settings on both software firewalls and your router. Give it a go and let us know how you get on.

You can do this from inside Windows itself.
Enable remote desktop on you're laptop, note it's ip address and make sure you're laptop's firewall isn't blocking port 3389.
Start remote desktop in the Windows 7 pc, pop in you're ip address, user name and password and jobs a goodun.
It's also worth while switching off any power saving features on the laptop - save it going to sleep after 20 mins and freezing you out.

Windows Remote desktop has never allowed 'retention' of desktop controls on-screen if it is being controlled by another user via Remote Desktop - as said above you must have been using a third party remote viewer such as VNC or Teamviewer that was scratched once updated to W7.

Unless you were using Remote Assistance of course - that works in a slightly different way.
