Along with Amazon and the rest, they'll just move to the next nearest vat free territory.

Either their going to have to take a hugh reduction in profit or (more likely), raise prices even more.

I didn't think that a roll of Provia 400 could get any more expensive than it has done in the last year (about £4.50 in Dec last year, now£7.19) and thats at 7dayshop so if VAT is added that comes to £8.62. Its "only" £8.54 in AG Photographic but you have to add on postage as well.

Yes bad news over here at the mo, hundreds of jobs could be lost IF HMV and amazon pull out, lots of flower greenhouses over here too going to suffer exporting flowers.

7 Day shop might suffer too or prices will just go up slightly.

Healthspan boss Derek Coats is on a mission to sue the goverment for doing what they have done, as alot of his stuff gets exported too.

We will have to see what happens to these places in the near future

It means they'll get a lot of bulk orders for film between now and April 1st next year.

I love the NewsThump take on this story.
Including....

The news has also caused anger amongst residents of the Channel Islands.

“We’ve been benefitting from being part of the UK for years now, and yet suddenly the government is now saying we’re going to have to start paying our fair share of tax? It’s a disgrace.”

“We haven’t seen this big a threat to the local economy since John Nettles announced he was leaving Bergerac.”

This is what I posted on the I Shoot Film flickr group about it:

For me, it's the free delivery that seals the deal with 7dayshop. I tend to buy small quantities at a time, so places like AG and especially Firstcall with their delivery charges make it incredibly uneconomical. Hopefully the free delivery will stay, but this is a massive shame - film is hardly that cheap in the UK at the moment compared to the US, and this probably means, twinned with strong silver prices, that it's only going up.

Just as an aside, the founders of 7dayshop were always in Guernsey anyway, they didn't move there for this reason...!

All this because the small independent suppliers of things like DVDs and cheap printer cartridges in the UK were whinging about being out-competed. We should find out who the whingers are and boycott them as punishment for making it more expensive for us. "Fair share" of tax is rubbish - tax is legalised theft anyway...

Damn that's where I have bought memory cards in the past from 'picstop'

Oh well best order soon to get my stick up before it rises 20%

:(

How are Kodak doing anyway? Everyone was worryi ng about them dropping dead not so long ago, are we more relaxed now, or do I go for it any buy up 7DS' remaining stock of Ektar now?

Rapidly falling apart. They have sold the last bit of their sensor business and recently stopped making plus-x and one of the colour films. They have stated that their target is to become a printer and ink company. Doesn't bode too well! ;)

hmm, wonder what a life's supply of Ektar looks like?!

Mine? The two rolls left in the drawer that I didn't shoot before I gave up colour film!

If I wanted a life's supply of Tri-X I think I'd be looking at averaging it out to about a roll a week.

520 rolls for a decade, 2500 rolls might about do me.

2500 x £3.50 a roll = £8,750.

Gulp.

Well, the founders of play.com sold out recently, they got a lot less than they would have without this being in the offing, but obviously realised something was better than nothing.....

sounds just about like a used pentax 645d IF one could find such :D

Might have to pop round to 7ds at the weekend and ask a few questions about how much it will affect them and whats going to happen to them, i know they are a guernsey based firm but you never know, watch this space

Information straight from the horses mouth would be absolutely fantastic - thanks in advance!

Just been told off my accountant wife that this will not happen as its the UK thats stopped the VAT less etc NOT the Channel Islands.

Technically you are importing something from here so you would/should have to pay VAT on it. All the goverment have said is we are stopping this now and everything will be full price.
It is actually illegal for some reason what they have done, wife does not know the full reasons yet but she will find out, thats why there is a big group setting up over here to fight it.

Same as if say for arguments sake:

I can buy the 70-200 f2.8 L IS mk11 from amazon for £1423 brand new, now if you asked me to buy it for you and send it over I would have to say on the box what it was etc so you would have to pay the import VAT on it taking it back up to its full price.

Saying that i could buy it at £1423 charge you £150 for my services which would take the price to £1573 + postage say £25 RMSD and send it to you as a gift and the chances of it being stopped is slim. But is it worth the risk??

its only on goods up to £15

I thought that you only paid VAT on import if you purchased from outside the EU. So if you pay VAT in the channel islands (and assuming they can set their own VAT rate, seeing as they're been able to do without it for so long) at something ridiculously low which would mean it won't need paying on import.

Just a thought, probably wrong.

Correct. Anything above £15 is liable to VAT and import duty anyway.

It's the likes of Play.COm who import DVDs from the UK to the Channel Islands then export them back to the UK again in order to swindle the taxman that are to blame. It was inevitable that this loophole was going to get plugged. Unfortunately it's the real exporters like growers that are going to lose out.

I think a fair and equitable solution would be for a system of exemptions that growers and other enuine exporters could apply for.

I need to make more room in the freezer to stock up now

A fair and equitable solution would be for all tax havens to be closed down :D

Would you still think the same way if you won/inherited from a dear old aunt millions and wanted an offshore account that would not rob you of all your monies???
Thought not:lol:

Much better to make everywhere a tax haven;)

Ok latest news on 7dayshop.

Went there this afternoon to pick up some cheap batteries for the camera, bloody good deal, 2 batteries for my 50D for £10
Anyways I had to travel round the island to find them as they have moved from their pokey little warehouse they had into this massive new building, I asked the guy how the VAT thing was going to effect them and what their future was.

His reply was, we are not going anywhere, the company will carry on as normal, ok the VAT will have to be added now but we are still alot cheaper than most places for most things.

So there you have it you can still buy from 7DS for the forseeable future.

The current film prices + 20% = me buying film from AG instead.

Boxes of 10 at a time it is then...lol

Current 7day shop price for 3 rolls of Tri-X = £11.07 + 20% = £13.28 DELIVERY INCLUDED.
AG price for 3 rolls of Tri-X = £11.22 + £3.95 p&p = £15.17.

Even increasing the quantity to 10 to take advantage of AG's cheaper price on the bulk packs still leaves them a fiver dearer.

7day will still be getting my business.

Maybe my maths is wrong? As far as I can see, for 10 x 120 triX rolls....

7dayshop = £33.90 + 20% vat
= £33.90 x 1.20
= £40.68

Is more than...

Ag = £35.50 + £3.95
= £39.45

Maths is right but the data isn't quite right. 7dayshop have price breaks when buying either 2-4 rolls, 5-9 or 10 rolls :)

They're still a little over £1 more for 10 rolls of Tri-X than AG. AG are also cheaper for that sexy Portra 400. Especially if you get two 5 packs.

Check my post, I edited a split second before you quoted me as I remembered 7ds staggered their pricing. Lol

Ag is cheaper, definitely not a fiver more expensive...
