Hi all. Some exciting news came my way this morning. Received a telephone call off my tattooist asking me could I be one of the photographers to do liverpool tattoo convention. I said yes with no hesitation.
Made up ain't the word. I love tattoos so its a win win situation

I did Liverpool convention once for one of the companies who supply equipment and it was in the Student union building or somewhere like that, anyway there was a walk around the whole Hall that made easy work for the 80-200 but I think that it is the Adelphi now. Are you getting a free tattoo or something?

No I am just doing it out the kindness of my heart. I am a scouser born and bread and I love tattoos. Really interested in them and I have a few myself. It's at the Adelphi now. Looking forward to it x

see you there, couldnt make last years but looking forward to this years !

That's great news, congrats! :)

Tattoo conventions are something that I've wanted to photograph for a while now, but I wouldn't have a clue how to go about it... Would I be frowned upon if I were to photograph one despite not having any tattoos myself (yet)?!

Hey liz.

You should ask. Phone up tattooists that are going. Anythings worth a try.
My tattooist (the ones who's organised it) asked me and I said yes without hesitation.
I can't wait x

Hey ThatLiz, you wont be frowned upon just roll up and take your pictures but just be mindful if you are going to use flash that you dont put anyone off. sometimes a quick ask is a good idea before shooting incase the tattooists client doesnt want their picture taken.
You dont need any permission to shoot at conventions just go for it. I have done Liverpool and manchester a few times and you will find so much great stuff to shoot.

Excellent! I keep missing the Liverpool tattoo conventions, might try my hardest to get there this year. Just had a couple more done recently by a very good tattooist in Liverpool who goes all over the country and Europe to conventions. It's something I'd love to do, photograph tattooist plying their trade. If you can, post some of your photos in here afterwards.

I sure will put some photos on here. Really can't wait

Thanks for the suggestions! It's reassuring to know that I wouldn't be frowned upon - I know it sounds silly, but that the main reason I'd never really looked into taking tattoo photos before.

I didn't realise that you could just turn up and take photos either, so I'll definitely start looking into that soon!

And as Alan said, I'd love to see some of your photos after the convention, Ruth. Would be great to see how it's done before I try my hand at it!

Hi Ruth, Hope you enjoy yourself, loads of subject mater at conventions, go for it, once you have gone round the tattooists a few time they will recognise you and let you get in close for some cracking shots.

A few links to some conventions I have done .........

Love the photos Dave :) The close-ups of tattooists at work are incredible! What do you find the lighting conditions tend to be like at tattoo conventions? ...Or is it just luck of the draw?

Bloody brilliant Dave. I really need to get some shots like this. Really can't wait now. Every photo I see just fills me with more excitement x

Depends on the venue.......... usually do a circuit using flash (bounce card), then a circuit using ambient .... (obviously upping the iso) .... artists usually have some form of spotlighting set up, which can give good effects. Loads of time to try different things........ lenses etc, standard 50mm for low light, 100mm macro for close ups, just use what you have and take plenty of shots, show an interest in what your photographing and all is good........... Good to follow a few tattoos from drawing to completion. ...............Main thing is .... ENJOY

Hi Dave. I have a Nikon d5100 18-55mm lens kit. Will this be ok to use.

Thats very kind of you, ... Take plenty of cards, and batteries, start with easy "doable " shots and progress from there when your confidence gets better, artists are usually a friendly lot who dont mind being photographed as its all part of the reason they are there ..... promoting their skills and studio ...... let them know where your shots can be viewed and its happy days.

Not really any sort of expert on kit, but if thats the camera and lens you have then
that is what you use to the best of your ability......... Because you have a few days at the convention, its not crucial that you get "the shot" first time, you can try a few different settings, have a look at your results in a quiet corner and make any adjustments to get the images you want,........ artists will not be moving far so you can have as many attempts as you like at different booths.

Looking forward to seeing the end results ....

A fast lens and or an off camera Flashgun would be the kit I'd be taking :thumbs:could be a situation where lighting could be an issue, get both the tatoo and the tatooist well lit

A 24-70mm f2.8 or maybe 70-300 mm for more candid shots and I think even a wide angle like the 10-20mm would produce some interesting shots, given the subject matter-Id opt for manual setting and change the speed or aperture/ISO as required

look forward to seeing the results

Les :D
