Tatton Park Deer Rut

Interesting - I wonder if this behaviour will be replicated across the country?

Strangely I’ve noticed new signs up at Woburn Abbey warning about the deer rut. Maybe it’s coming from insurers that they need to put up warning to protect from being sued.

The signs at Woburn did make me smile. They say not to approach within 100m of any deer, yet also say stick the public footpaths. It’s pretty much impossible to do both with the number of deer and limited public footpaths.

I’m not surprised tighter rules are happening having seen the stupidity of people over the years (especially just after Covid) either venturing into out of bounds areas or getting far too close trying to get a selfie.

I talked with a ranger the day before they shut the gate - apparently a lack of food means they're much more territorial over the areas around the oak trees, since they eat the acorns. They were decidedly less active while I was there, but there was a lovely black swan in the lake by the bird hide.

How does Tatton Park compare with Richmond Park? In terms of visitor numbers, cars and bikes? MAMILs tend to treat the main road and the Tamsin Trail as their own personal velodrome, taxis park anywhere to drop off passengers who walk up to the deer to take photos, and then within a few days news reports emerge of someone else getting injured by a Stag, or even worse a Fenton Mk 2....

Weekends some of the roads in RP are actually closed off, but during the week they are open. I'll bear what you've said about deer at Tatton Park when I go to Richmond or Bushy Parks
