I purchased a laptop as a present for my mother a few years ago from Lidl. The laptop has been great apart from one problem which recently cropped up. The laptop has a fairly large 17” screen and unfortunately the mounts attaching to the bottom of the screen broke away. The computer still worked however the left hand side hinge had broken away from the rest of the screen and was fixed in one position.

I honestly thought that was the end of the laptop and was looking around to buy my mother a new one, but i decided to email Targa and see what they said. I used their web form Sunday evening and decided to wait. Monday morning 9am Targa phoned my mobile and wanted to know a bit more about what had happened. After explaining to the guy on the phone, he said they would send a courier out and repair it. At this point i was over the moon as this was going to save me a few £££ so the laptop was picked up last Wednesday and taken back to Germany. Unfortunately the courier service left a tracking number which didn’t work, so we were on edge for a while. This morning however the laptop was returned safe and sound by DHL.

Targa had replaced the hinge and bezel around the screen, updated the bios and provided a new screen protector. Fantastic service when you consider it was picked up on Monday shipped to Germany, probably arrived there Thursday they fixed it, and it was shipped back on the Tuesday.

I would seriously advise anyone to buy with confidence.

That is outstanding service

I had that happen on an Acer laptop that was 15 months old and they didnt want to know !

I would never buy an Acer again either.... The power supply hole on the laptop (the one with a pin that sticks out in the middle) broke. The pin broke off after 2 months of having the laptop. I contacted Acer and they basically said tough luck, that was due to wear and tear which is not covered under any guarantee. I could return it to them at my cost and pay £75 for the repair plus the cost of return postage. i got it repaired at my local PC shop for £40 in the end.

I wrote to Acer but the response was the same. They said I must have been too heavy handed. I know full well that I wasnt and it just came out when i pulled the PSU adaptor out.

I still have the laptop and is still working OK but when people ask me what laptop to buy I always refer back to this and try to put them off Acer.

BTW... Well done Targa...
The Germans certainly know how to build things well but if they fail then their customer service is usually top class..!!

I had a medion machine from one of the cheapo supermarkets (aldi / lidl, forget which), dead cheap and was a good machine.

My first laptop was an Acer, 2 years old and it stopped outputting display to the lcd, as everything is build on the motherboard it was a case of chucking it as the motherboards were not available (and expensive even if they were). I wouldn't buy another.

I've had a similar service from Targa (bought from Lidl) towards the end of the 3yr warranty, hard drive failed, called me on my mobile, same story as you, superb service, TARGA are the best. :)

That is brilliant service from Targa, impressed.

I am a trainer by profession and travel either Uk or by air and have previously tried at least 3 Acer laptops and they are not up to the job. The best of the Acers was the Travelmate but the silver paint wears off the hinges flex. No question i'd now stick with HP or preferably the toughie IBM/Lenovo thinkpads. However non in my experience would beat that service by Targa, they must have been sitting around with little to do! Of course i wouldn't buy one, the reason it failed, the hinge, is exactly the weak spot on so many laptops I have learned to avoid. Incidentally I have a HP 17in mobile workstation, which is big, heavy and tough, not for on te road but very well built.

along with the targa a few years ago i had a medion and had the same service from them. I hear a lot of aldi/lidl bashing on some forums, but they are the only ones to offer long guarantees and resolve problems without any arse ache.

I had a similar experience with an external hard drive that failed from aldi.

It was about 2 years old but got replaced without a problem.

Luckily I had backed up the data jsut a few days earlier!

A very well known fault with Acer laptops.
