Tamron vs Sigma

Hi there, looking for some good glass to replace my tatty old 18-55mm kit lens. For my Nikon D70s

Im thinking either...

Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD ASP IF Lens
or
Sigma 17-70mm f2.8-4.5 Macro Lens

Any recommendations?
 
Ohhh 2-1... Any more views people?

Anyone got the Tamron if so could you recommend a buying place online for the UK?
 
Don't forget the Sigma 18-50 F2.8, most of the reviews I have read say it focuses faster than the Tamron, what do the Tamron owners think of that, is it true?
 
Yeah ive looked at that too,that would be my limit of spending though. Tamron seems cheaper but Sigma seem better build and glass?

Ive got a 70-300 sigma an im not too fond of it.
 
Do you need the extra range of the sigma? If no then get the Tamron,
 
I have the Tamron, in fact, I've had it twice. Once for Canon and once for Nikon (I changed Canon for Nikon, and re-bought the 17-50 f/2.8).

FWIW, I have the motorised version and I'm quite happy with it.
 
I have the Sigma and i love it, i also had this choice but i have always been impressed with the Sigma lenses, I had one Tamron but i got shot of it due to it's terrible autofocus speed so that put me off.
 
I'd recommend the Tamron 2.8 between the two, but have a look at the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8 as well. I have the original version of the 18-50 2.8 (non macro) and think it's a decent lens (I'm going to start comparing it to the 16-85mm VR I've just acquired to see which I prefer)

I want to find out how this compares with the latest HSM version and if it's worthwhile, change it for one...

Does anyone here know how the original Sigma 18-50 2.8 compares with the latest HSM version?
 
All I can say is I have the sigma and I'm getting rid of it in favour of the Tamron.
 
Doubt you'd be disappointed by either. What do you want more, the extra 20mm of reach or the faster aperture at the long end?
 
I'd go for Tamron. I quickly tested one, and it was sharp, just wildly distorted at 17mm.

Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 can work, but they may need recalibration before they behave properly. Again that comes from experience with club's lens.

I have the 18-50mm 2.8 macro lens (canon fit) and I am looking to sell it. Its good as new as I upgraded to a 5d and cant use it:'(

I think we go to the same college so no problem for the delivery.

Mods - sorry if this is breaking the rules but ill post in sale/trade to keep it above board.:)
 
The Tamron 17-50 F2.8 is a cracking little lens.

This is the only Tamron lens I have, I do like the IQ, but it does feel fragile.

Which is why I sold mine. IQ is excellent but it is a bit on the plasticky side, but then for a couple of hundred quid for a nice, lightly used example you'll struggle to find much better :)
 
I have the 17-70 and whilst the extra reach can be useful the lack of f2.8 at anything other than the widest focal length (where it is less needed) is frustrating. :)
 
i've just got the tamron for motorsports (rallying) and i'm quite concerned by the focus speed, it's hunting like amd n anything but bright light on a 40d, may buy the sigma to test directly against!
 
i had the 17-70 sigma,which was a brill performer IMO,but the min aperture at the long end wasn't much use in low light situations,so i got the 18-50 F/2.8 instead....and i'm not dissapointed.i think you will be happy with either lens[including the tamron,although it does feel cheap in comparison].

I have the Sigma 17-70 and it whilst it feels well built, the IQ isn't amazing, tripod test shots are still a bit soft- not sure if its slightly OOF, or just a characteristic of the 17-70, or if its my 400D. I plan to upgrade to a 40 or 50D this year but want a sharper lens- so was considering the Tamron 17-50 as it always get good reviews about being very sharp, however the build quality isn't supposed to be that good. Think I'm gonna have to go and have a play with some in a shop!
