I have been looking at different lenses to fit my EOS 350D.

Can't quite manage a Canon one at the moment so looking at cheaper alternatives.

I have a chance on a new Tamron AF55-200, f/4-5.6 for £60.

Is this an acceptable first zoom? I don't want to spend much until I've played with one and discovered if that lens will fit what I'll be using it for. But this seems too cheap to be any good.

I'm thinking of ordering that for my canon rebel XT 350D , would this camera be good for landscape shots over my canon 55mm standard lens?

I would think you want something wide, not a telephoto lens for landscapes :thinking:

The 70-300 mm Tamron seems to be similar to the Sigma 70-300 mm I have, but from what I've seen, CA can get a lot worse than with my Sigma.

I think there was someone here with that Tamron, one of the ladies, I think.

Canon EF-S 55-250mm f4-5.6 IS
Tamron AF 70-300mm F/4-5.6 Di LD macro 1:2
Canon EF100-300MM F4.5 USM
 
I have the Tamron 70-300 Pentax fit which I've just bought for a bargain price (£69 from Warehouse Express).

I'm very pleased with it, sharpness is excellent & colour rendition/contrast are also good - as mentioned it does sometimes show some purple fringing which needs removing in PP

I also have the Tamron 70-300 that I nicknamed "The Purple Monster" for its love of purple fringing. Just don't use the Tamron in high contrast shots like ducks frolicking in the water, or birds in the branch silhouetted by a bright blue sky, or even insects on white flowers. I kid you not, I am more then less then pleased with this lens, and keep it only because of the 1:2 macro mode that is perfect for large insect macros..if you don't mind removing the purple fringe that seems to show up all the time. You get what you pay for, and I can’t really complain much about this lens based on the price point.

I haven't forgotten, but although the lens arrived on Monday, the camera is nowhere to be seen.:shrug:

I'm in the process of ordering from somewhere else and then we'll be in business.
 
Sorry it's taken so long to follow up on this.

The 350D never arrived and I had to wait for my new purchase, the 400D replacement.

The lens seems to be fine. I'm a complete novice so I'm not sure how valid my review will be but it fits, works and is easy to use. It offers auto focus and the subject looks clear when shooting.

I have added a few images taken with the lens so you can judge for yourself.

Craigellachie:) Nice bridge, very photogenic in the right light...

I used the Tamron 70-300mm on my first DSLR, a D50. And I think, as a lens to learn with, it's fantastic. Practice, practice, practice. Then you'll reach a point you need more....
