Has anyone else got this lens? Mine is inexcusably soft when at 300mm especially when the aperture is larger than f11.

At first I thought it was the cheap uv filter I'm using but just tested it without the filter and it's exactly the same.

Not that it makes any difference I'm using a nikon D90.
Considering getting the 70-300 nikon G lens instead. Any opinions?

Mark.

Looks like the one in the link. I got it for around £60 off eBay, thought it was a bit of a bargain at the time.

Bit miffed now though cos I'm going to watch my friend racing tomorrow and I was hoping to get some good photos of him on track.

If anyone has used the 70-300 G lens please let me know. Is it any good?

For the money, its worth every penny..really good for beginners/amateurs, lack of IS was a problem for me, but if you keep the shutter speeds up and only shoot when its pretty bright then you shouldn't have a problem.

But as you say..it is soft at the top end, the nikon is still quite soft, but nowhere near as bad as the tamron..up to you, fair few quid more expensive mind..depends how often you use it I'd say.

Yes I bought ones few weeks back... At 300mm zoom, the DOF is insanely small unless you close your aperture down and there is VC in it so getting a clean shot off a tripod will be hard.

If you have a look on my flickr site most of the macro shots I have done have been with this lens, the exif info is also there to help

I have not tested it yet however for zoom shots
