So I'm after a decent fast lens for doing a bit of 'birding' and this seems to have quite postitive reviews.

Does anybody here actually own one and if so what are your thoughts?

It's a great lens, I've managed sharp images as low as 1/6 at 300mm 5.6 in dim light handheld, The VC is incredible.

I'm looking at this lens. New price is not far off from what you pay for a used Nikon 70-300mm vr.

Thanks guys, I've picked one up this morning and I'm seriously impressed although I've not had the chance to use it in anger yet.

Can't believe how good the VC is and the build quality is awesome.

Fantastic lens. Had some great portraits with it too outside. Very sharp and I exercised at the Air Tattoo Show and recently went on a trip to Lebanon and Spain. Never let me down and the VC is fantastic. You can actually see the image in view finder being frozen.

Yeah, its a bit Matrix when the VC kicks in. Enjoy the new lens mate, recently sold mine as Im switching to primes, but have a feeling Ill regret the lack of flexibility and VC.

Cheers buddy. The VC effect thought the viewfinder is very reassuring. I've recently moved from Sony to Nikon so I could'nt see the stabilization working.

Just waiting for some birds to start feeding at my table again now after next doors cat was politely asked to leave my back garden ;)

I have the Canon version, as others have said the VC is outstanding - it really is - however I find the AF a little sluggish.
