Ive been after a 70-200mm f2.8 lens for a while but am priced out of the market for the Nikon versions, Sigma are right at the top of my budget if not just out of my reach too.

I came across the Tamron SP AF 70-200mm f2.8 Di LD IF Macro lens while surfing around some camera sites and they seem to get a pretty decent review. The one thing that is brought up alot is the slower AF system compared to the Nikon and Sigma versions.

They seem pretty well priced and there are a few going on flebay for around £350. I was wondering of anyone here has had one or has got one that could give me first hand advice as to the quality of lens and images??

Thanks

Thanks mate. how havew you found the Siggy, ive heard they are a cracking lens?
I want one for indoor sports stuff, places i cant use flash, and have heard the Tamron is a bit slow on the AF. Im guessing you havent had that issue with the Sigma?

The AF if the Sigma is very fast and quiet, I use it a lot for indoor show jumping.

The Tamron AF is supposed to be very slow.

I thunk i may jump on this band wagon for the sigma, its either that or go for the nikon 80-200 at about £600

I'll post up a few test shots when i get it :)

Good man

I had a D90 and Tamron 70-200 and found the AF very slow.

Yeah that seems to be a pretty consistant comment about that lens, think il be ending my interest in the Tamron and since the Nikon is out of my price band ill be searching for the Sigma version.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated

I bought the tamron, and I found the AF a bit too slow for what I needed it, (sports- ice hockey). Swapped to the Sigma and it definately became easier getting in focus in time. I think the difference (secondhand) between them was 50 quid, but IMO definately worth it.

Nothing else wrong with the Tamron though, AF was the only issue, so if you're not in need of rapid AF, then I guess it doesn't matter.

I had the tamron and the af is a wee bit on the slow side, not sure it would be quick enough for indoor sports. I sold it and bought a nikon 80-200 f2.8 on this forum and the difference is awesome. Look for a second hand one of those and you will not regret it.

Looking good. I've actully bought one myself and am heading out to try it this afternoon. Havent tried it in low light yet but looking forward to playing around today ;)

ahh sweet! I was really surprised how good the focus was in low light after reading some of the reviews! Which version did you go for?

Ended up getting the APO DG HSM EX version. Havent tried it in low light yet but went down to my local lake today and shot some ducks on the pond. Was impressed with the AF speed and the clarity of the images. Just gotta get used to using it so I can maximise its capabilities.

Is it the HSM 1 or 2?

Its the HSM1 mate. Took it out for a quick test today, didnt have too long with it as i had the kids and dog with me so not as much time to get used to it as i would have liked.

Fired off a few passing ducks and was quite happy with the results
