Does anyone have experience with these lenses? After fighting with myself for ages I think this is more the focal length I want rather than the 17-50mm range I first thought. I'm using a d3100. Thanks.

My back up plan will be the Sigma 17-50 2.8, so how would these lenses compare to this?

Cheers, a confused Gary

Similar situation to me! I sold my tamron 17-50mm for a sigma 24-70 HSM for my D7000.

Tamron is much cheaper and produces amazing results for its price. The reason why i got the sigma was because I prefered the 24mm end rather than the 28mm end. Although the tamron has a 5mm extra reach compared to the sigma.

Reviews I read was that AF for the tamron is not as fast as the Sigma, but still decent and not very slow. Would have gotten the 28-75 if I was using full frame though

Thanks for the reply, I've been having a look round and from what I can see the Tamron gets the better reviews. I don't really think I'll be that bothered by going wider than 28mm too much, I'll be keeping hold of my kit lens so I'll always have the option of using that if need be. It's sooooo confusing, I had my mind made up on the 17-50 but I just can't stop thinking I's like that extra reach.

The Tamron is a great lens for the price. Be careful though, I bought a second hand one from eBay and ended up returning it due to it back-focussing.

I've just got another one from Ffordes though, and it's great. I doubt you'll find a better lens for the price. The 17-50 is amazing on a crop body, but the 28-75 has the advantage of working on a FF body should you ever upgrade.

I've got the Sigma 24-70 HSM , its brilliant !

never had a Tamron so cant compare, plenty of people rave about the Tamrons but to be honest the appearance/build quality didnt do it for me, I know the optics of a lens are the important bits but I just thought the Sigma looked better

Have you been on pixel peepers and looked for these lenses on your camera ?

Yeah, I've been on pixel peepers and the only have pictures from the Tamron on the d3100, they look good enough for me :)

I'm not too fussed about the look of the lens as long as it takes the pictures well. The HSM is the thing about the Sigma but the Tamron seems to be quite a bit cheaper and from reviews I've looked at fairs better  If only my pockets were a bit deeper :)

I would go for the older Tamron 28-75, the one without the motor. I've had both and for me AF was slower and poorer on the new one. Might just have been the copy I had though

I need one with a motor as my d3100 doesn't have one.

I bought the Tamron 28-75 for my D300 recently. Got it from OSD for £270, delivered in two days. Very impressed with it, sharp fast enough focus but does hunt a little in very low light. Here are a couple of examples.

1; My daughter on a bright snowy day.

Hope this helps!!

Yeah, thanks Nick, that one of your daughter is lovely, that's the sort of pics I want to get of my girls, thats why I'm thinking this length over the 17-50mm.

As for the hunting in low light, I know there's gonna be some trade offs for the price so I'll see how I go with that.

The hunting is not too bad but it is as you say one of the trade offs. The wedding picture was taken at ISO 1600 wide open so not too shabby

what's the going rate of these two on the used market?

Got my Tamron 28-75 through the post today, not really had too much of a chance to try it out but it seems to be focusing well and taking some lovely sharp images.....Only problem is the live veiw focus doesn't seem to work but I can probably live with that.

After looking online this seems to be a problem with the d7000, so I'm figuring it's the same with the d3100. Surprised I hadn't read about this before, like I say though not really a problem for me. The wife will have to learn to use the viewfinder if she wants to use it :)
