Hello everybody!!! I have recently purchased tamron 18-400 mm lens. I was earlier using Nikon 70-300mm lens. I purchased the tamron for getting 100 mm more than the Nikon lens. But the strange thing which I noticed is that I’m getting better zoom from my Nikon lens as compared to the tamron lens. I shot the same subject from the same distance using both lenses from the same camera at their respective full zoom capacities i.e. tamron at 400 mm and Nikon at 300 mm. The Nikon lens produced more zoomed photos than the tamron lens. But as far as I think it should be the other way around. I’m I missing something? Please help me. By the way I’m using Nikon D5200 camera.

Hi Madhu, and welcome to TP.

Although you don't say at what distance your subject was I'm guessing it was reasonably short and the phenomenon you have experienced is, therefore, called focus breathing. This is very common on superzoom lenses which doesn't imply there is anything wrong with the leans as it's a matter of optical physics. Try your test again with the subject further away and see if the result changes.

If you Google focus breathing and your lens you will find a number of reports and questions about it. You can also Google for a description of the phenomenon if you're interested in learning more about it.

Thanks Bristolian for the reply. I did check both the lenses for far objects. Yes, there were clear differences between them this time. The tamron lens had more zoom, but still it was not too much. Certainly not what I expected. I will post some pics in a while maybe then you could help me better. Thanks for your help really appreciate it.

There are only 2 degrees difference in the angle of view.
