Hi,

I currently own the Canon 20D and the standard 18 - 55 lens. Now I was planning on getting into lifestyle portraits a bit and some still life so I was looking at the Canon 50mm 1.8.

However looking at recent threads, and images, the Tamron 17 - 50 has stolen my heart. Will this produce portraits with a similar quality to the 50mm 1.8 or not?

If its worse will it be significant? I know both would be ideal but not affordable unfortunately!

Thanks.

It won't be as sharp as a 50mm f/1.8 prime, but it's still a corking lens, and has the added bonus of being f/2.8 at any focal length you fancy between 17 and 50 which obviously the prime won't be able to do!

That's the final plan - but not possible right now.

Thanks for your help Stu. Probably gonna get the Tamron for now and get the 50mm in 2/3 months.

Sorry I was no help at all! I did the opposite, got the 50mm about month go and I'm gonna get the tamron in about month! Happy shooting and post some shots up once you've got it

Haha, it would of been the answer I wanted if I had the money!

How are you finding the 50? I'm still not 100% on it. A lot of people seem to complain about the build quality.

It's less than 80 quid so it's not going to be built like L series glass but personally I love my nifty fifty and it almost lives on one of my bodies.

Of note with the Tamron is that apparently the older and thus cheaper non-VC version of the lens is actually sharper than the VC one. Lots of reports that the VC is soft, which put me off I must say.

i have the non vc, its superb and i cant rate it highly enough for the money.

Well... I loved it. Then I dropped it and it broke in two. Basically the front bit (excuse technical jargon) came of the back bit. They were held together by this much plastic *holds forefinger and thumb very close to each other* which snapped on impact.
However, today I clipped it back together (they was also little plastic 'clips' inside it) and it seems to work, if somewhat fragile! But yes, I love it sharp enough for me.
