Yes
Saw this at Park Cameras in London today and my initial impressions were good but 1 didn't record any images.

Moreover tried it on a 7D with a 1.4x extender and it still focussed well - that gives about 672mm focal length!

Will await reviews but may well go for this as my new "travel lens" (£529 + cost of extender).

Mel

Focal length will be 420mm surely ? (1.4 x 300)

I wonder if the figure of 672mm is a result of chucking in the crop factor of the 7D (1.6) as well?

From my basic maths, it is! :-)

I've not used the lens, but I do wonder OP wether you'll have AF issues in less than excellent light given the f-stop with the 1.4 on will be over f/8. Might be one to try if you plan to use it for really long reach stuff when the light is so-so.

You can't AF on anything over f5.6 unless you have a 1 series Canon (I think). So with a 1.4, the would need the lens to have a aperture of f4 or faster. My 300 f4 works with the 1.4 on my 7D, but I tried it on a 100-400 at f5.6 and it didn't want to play.

It worked in Park Cameras showroom in artificial light - but that was reasonable lighting.

Yes ("apparent" 762mm) with 1.6 crop. Not real I know!

No wonder they blew out the 18-270 for £279 in may.

What extender was the 1.4?

Gotcha, that explains it ta.
It was likely a non reporting TC which means the camera doesn't know it's there in order to turn off the autofocus.

Mystery solved.

Will be interesting to see what IQ this lens delivers for such a long zoom.

But it did auto focus! will have to try it with a canon extender / teleconverter (somebody?). The rep did this at my request and had ot tried the lens with an extender before.

could it have possibly been one of the Kenco teleconverters?

I know it did, sorry you misunderstood what I was saying.

Autofocus function is controlled by the camera, and when the camera recognises a teleconverter which pushes the max aperture above the F5.6 it turns off autofocus.

If the converter does not report it's presence in a certain way then the camera doesn't know to turn off the autofocus - therefore AF will still function.

I did not realise that not all teleconverters were not (electronically) equal. New info for me - thanks. Mel
