I've been looking at buying a Tamron 150-600 G2 but I've come across a used G1 version at a very good price.
The reviews on both seem quite good and I know there are a couple of members here who highly regard the G2.
If there are any G1 users out there I'd appreciate your opinion.

I've used one very happily ever since it came out and got some very good results.

However with my current combination - this lens and a Canon 5d3 - I'm not getting much joy with photographing birds in flight. Whether that is the fault of the lens, the body, or my reflexes I don't know.

What would you say was a good price for a used G1?

New UK price for a G1 is £749 and the G2 is £1200, however on a certain auction site and with e-infinity the G2 is £765.
I've seen a G1 going for £525 and he's open to offers and I think he might accept around £500.
I've recently bought a Tamron 100-400 from e-infinity and I would happily buy from them again but wondering if the G2 is worth the extra £270

I have the G2 and it’s a cracking lens,
Got mine from E-Infinity too,
Doubt you’ll be disappointed with it,
By the way, what’s your 100-400 like ?
I’m toying on the idea of the 70-210 tamron to accompany my 150-600

You are one of the users I was referring to in my opening post :)
I'm very pleased with the 100-400 it's just the reach is a bit short for some of the wildlife I want to shoot.
I'll be using a 150-600 in hides and I've been looking at the 70-210 as a walk about lens as I've previously owned a Canon 70-200 IS f4 which I found great for shooting people without being sussed.
However, I've since decided that the 100-400 could double up for doing that and some wildlife photography.
If I were you Liam (unless you want to buy new), I would consider a used Canon 70-200 IS f4 as they really are a very good lens.
If I wanted a 70-200 I would have another Canon without a doubt.

I would replace my G1 150-600 with a G2 if I knew for sure I was going to keep my Canon system. I have faith that the G2 is a better lens.

Can you elaborate?

I hired a g2 from @StewartR at the start of the year. It took a few goes to get used to shooting at 600mm handheld compared to my previous experiences of using a 70-300.. once I got my technique sorted "wow" what a lens. It's sharp, focussed quickly, the stabilisation works very well. Everything I'd hoped for really

I'm still debating my "need" for one regarding whether to buy or not.

I would stretch to the G2 but if not the G1 is ‘only’ £579 brand new with warrenty from e infin. I’d take that over a second handlens at £500 with no warrenty any day of the week.

I seen a review of the sigma, tamron and Nikon versions and they tested them in actual use for a few months.

The Tamron was full of dust so I would not trust them personally.

Its only one review / test but I lost confidence in them.

I can't find the G1listed on the e-infinity website?

Well, if you read the reviews you will find that the G2 is a better lens in almost every respect. However, while I am dithering about whether to move on from Canon I'm going to stick with the G1. No point in buying twice!

I agree the reviews do favour the G2 but that should be the norm for a newer model of the lens.

The Canon 100-400 is well known for being a dust pump but from what I've read it doesn't cause a problem with IQ.

After some thought I've decided on the G2 version, it would be silly not to go for one with e-infinity price being so good.
Thanks guys for your input I really appreciate it. :)

I never thought about that, I might hire one from Stewart.
I plan on using one on a tripod in hides but it would be good if I could use one hand held.

I have the G1 and rate it highly. From what I understand there's nothing in it optically between the G1 and G2 (other than sample variation) but the G2 is better in AF, dust sealing etc.

I was always happy with the IQ and AF from my original Tamron 150-600 but a lot of people experienced a 'lock-up' at random times, mostly cured by switching off/on (not ideal).

The reviews I've read that say the same about the optics with both lenses, that's why I initially thought about the G1.
The dust sealing didn't cause me too much concern as I've experienced this with lenses before and it's never cause me an IQ problem.
However, the AF is what has swayed me more towards the G2.

I read that the lock-up problem with the G1 was more common with the Nikon version?

I purchased G1 from a member here and am happy with it, however it's a bit of a beast to hand hold, I wanted to try a bit of wild life with it just to try something new, you really need to be supported (leaning against something) or have a tripod unless you have a very steady hand (I don't) here's a couple I took at shuttleworth airshow a couple of weeks ago hand held and I have never shot planes before. And a deer from Woburn

Super zooms have always been a beast to handle that's one reason I am prepared to use one on a tripod.
Do you have those hosted anywhere that are in a larger file format?
Please don't take it personally but I find small file size images are hard to gauge the IQ of a lens.

No sorry I don't, and no offence taken :) as I said first time I have used it so I was reasonably pleased with the results, I think I only paid £475 for the lens from here in excellent condition, so no complaints from me :)

Oddly if you search it’s not there but if you click on the Tamron logo on the homepage it comes up.

However (and I apologise) it’s been discontinued! Oh well G2 it is then! It was £759 a few weeks ago so looks like it’s creeping back up!

I've already decided on the G2.
Only thing now is to convince my other half that I can buy one a month before we go on holiday.
Having recently bought a Canon 80D, Tamron 100-400 and a couple of other Canon lenses, I might be pushing my luck

If you do I’d love to know your thoughts on the two Tamrons. I hear they are both similar sharpness at 400mm.

150 - 600 = 240 - 960 on a crop; that's quite a range!
