Taken by me, a total DSLR newbie, with a Tamron 70-300mm at full 300mm macro zoom on a D90.

For a budget zoom for a Nikon you really can't beat the Nikon 55-200 VR which you can pick up dirt cheap - I'm constantly impressed by the quality of the pictures from mine.

correct, I paid £102 for mine, genuine Nikon refurb, stunning lens for the money and if you're not worried about the extra 100mm it's defo worth it over the tamron, and £102 + £12 for a Class 10 8GB SDHC card and say £40 for a decent Lowepro Bag (because the Nova AW 160 (yea I found your deal ;)) can be bought for £25) making a total of £154, saving £46 and you're getting better stuff

:plusone: for the 55-200mm VR.

I've got one and for the price I paid for it, it's a cracking lens. True it doesn't have the reach of the 300mm Tamron, but the IQ is much better, plus it has VR. I'd say get this and then save up for a better 300mm lens when you can afford it.

yep..my next stop is the 70-300mm VR (and a Tamron 90mm)
