Is this competition a SCAM.... it does sound too good to be true.

Got sent this through FlickrMail

Hi,
I’m the photography contest curator for Tallenge. I went through some of your photographs and think they are amazing. We, at Tallenge, are looking for photographers like you who have the potential to be recognized by the world.
I would like to invite you to participate in an online Photography contest at Tallenge where you can upload as many entries as you want and stand a chance to win a cash prize of $500.. There is no participation fee and you will gain global exposure. Here is the link to the contest: biSPAM/macroFLR47
Thank You
Sarah

Now first thoughts were to check T&Cs with everyone trying to get ownership and copyright of our images I had a gander through.

License section says;

License
Tallenge does not claim ownership to your Submission and you retain full rights and ownership that you had prior to uploading the material.

You hereby grant Tallenge a license, the details of which are enumerated below:

At the point of your uploading your Submission onto the Tallenge website, you grant each user of the Service a non-exclusive license to access and consume your Content as permitted through the functionality of the Service.

By uploading your Submission on Tallenge, for the purpose of making the material available through the Service, you grant Tallenge a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, transferable license to use, exhibit, distribute, publicly display, perform, re-format and promote the Submission, for free, in whole or in part, alone or in combination with other content or material, on Tallenge websites and promotional platforms.

Any other usage of your Submission will be with your permission.

The license terminates when you remove or delete your content from Tallenge.

Now the only issue is does anyone ever actually win??? If not you are just handing over your image for them to use for free.

I wont click on that link as it dont look like a proper address to me so im staying away from this.

I'm thinking about the "transferable license" part sounds a bit dodgy. Exhibit (ok, thats fine.. I suppose), distribute (what does that mean... are they making wonga out of this?), publicly display (that sounds ok but what are they getting out of it), perform (what does that mean?), re-format (what does that mean? Change it?).

I done a google on "tallenge" and there's a lot of web site stuff. Plenty of exposure though I'm just not sure what they get out of it.

I dont think there is any photography competitions out there that do anything not to benefit themselves. I think if you have an image that you dont intend to sell but maybe want to win some cash - it might just be worth it. Though, if you're not the winner (just like that BA competition that was talked about in a previous thread) - they're getting thousands of potentially excellent images that they get to use - for nothing. $500 isn't a lot of money, if they have 5,000 or even more (most likely, more) great images, they've paid pennies if not less for each image.

They've certainly done a lot of work getting the contest "out there". Its one I will be staying clear of though. I dont think I would win anyway and the thought that someone else may benefit from display or distribute my images and make something out of them doesn't appeal to me.

Good find though Bryn - and one I will be deleting from my inbox, if I get mailed :) Cheers fella

I would have said not a copyright grab, looks simply like a normal term to allow them to display your work in the context of the competition

Move along.... nothing to see here... move along,
