Talking of "limited budgets" for photography....

The surname of the chairman of Kaiserslautern FC comes to mind.

I've just looked at another thread posted by a forum member who was really pleased to have won a photo competition in his local newspaper.

The prize was a tenner.

For me this is part of exactly the same problem. Surely a photo as good as that deserves a prize of more than a mere tenner. I think there is a common misconception that all photographers do is turn up with a camera, point it and press a button.

A while ago I heard that the father of a bride complained "£400 just for a book full of photographs?"

It's an uphill struggle.

Worse than that, it was only £40.

One of the main reasons I stopped working for the Gov, I was fed up with generic emails being sent about, no one listening to the real problems and absolute idiotic to$$ers working in HQ creating ideas to obtain a bonus of which the idea was totally flawed and was obviously another way of burning funds before the end of year return!

I didn't even know about this GREAT campaign anyway, they can blow all these millions on rubbish but yet they moan every day on the news about NHS cuts etc, it just doesn't make sense?

If only Guy Fawkes had some luck that day.......

That's just pathetic. Where do they get this tight budget thing?
The responses to queries regarding it just adds insult to injury
Arrogant bassas

I see from the accompanying blog that 'Great' is headed up by our revered Culture Secretary Maria Miller, who claimed £90,000 in expenses for the house that her parents lived in.

any one fancy a FoI request on how the Great budget is actually wasted allocated ?

What! Don't you know that there's a recession on? Send your FOI request by all means, but if the information costs more than £450 to compile, they'll send you a bill. No, you can't claim it as a business expense.

Freedom is expensive, you know.

Interesting that using the Photoshelter guide, the article's author worked out a price of £15 - 20K and yet Glenn Copus was happy with £250. The article makes it clear he didn't understand all the license use they wanted but this is a guy who has been shooting press and PR for 44 years. Not somebody posting in the business forum saying "woohoo - somebody wants to use my pic!!!!!!!".

Given that range, is there any wonder clients don't understand pricing?

I was also contact recently by a magazine offering me some work. A days photo shoot with an actor they were interviewing, of which photo licensing were to be purchased and put in the magazine.

I was offered £50 for everything.

I think a lot of companies just decide that it can't be hard to take a photo, what they don't take into account is the upkeep, equipment costs, insurance, our time getting there in the first place! Even Peter Parker lived on pennies taking all those amazing shots of Spiderman in action :( lol

Where do I start with this?

Part of me really wants to cry when I read the utter drivel which emanates from some Govt departments.

Everything has to be done on the cheap - "although we really value your contribution and the work you put in."

I wonder what sort of "bonus" (from the 55 mill.) the Chief Executive - because everybody has a Chief Executive these days - will draw for his/her non performance at the end of Great?

I would like to end with a 'puking' smiley but I don't know if there is one because this is just a little bit SICK!!!!!!

I wish I could be shocked by this.

Me too :(

But whatever we think, the overriding perception of photography these days is low value. It just is, and for every photographer that stands on principle and declines low fees (or non-existent fees) there are plenty more who will happily take the bait.

If you want to make money from professional photography, then you need to get commissioned to actually take pictures - with very few exceptions. Once images exist, the value plummets. Protesting about multi-mi££ion budgets, above the line media costs the overseeing MP's expenses is not only irrelevant but completely pointless.
