Few people were interested in this the other day.

I just saw a video on Phlearn where they walk you through their experiments on a headshot shoot. I have to say I don't particularly like the end result but the process gives you some clues about a good approach.

Interesting. Thanks Jonathan. Looks like Garry's favourite kind of lighting :D

I used to copy stuff all the time at college and it's a great learning process. And as here, the end result never looked anything like the original LOL

Looking forward to the post-processing vid. There's quite a lot going on in the original shot that doesn't have nearly such shallow DoF as the copy, but the eyebrows have been softened to emphasise the eyes more while keeping the nose sharp. Good trick, I don't like blurry noses :)

Have to say I don’t like anything that was produced in that video, but also they ignored their own advice in looking at the catch-lights - if they were trying to recreate the pic of Emma Watson (does she really have a head that's that shape?) where you can clearly see three light sources; two very large close to either side of the photographer and a smaller above and behind – as many have pointed out in the comments area. IMO a web tutorial source to steer clear of :D

Interesting indeed - but not for me, except with exceptional subjects
