I am just messing with the Mac OS developers SDK from Apple, thinking about what to write and I thought about a picture up-loader widget for Talk Photography.

I will obviously need to speak to those people that run the site and get a little more information to allow this to happen but before I start coding it does anyone have any suggestions?

e.g. Drag a picture on and it resizes it, shrinks it to the correct file size etc etc

Let me know and i'll see how feasible it is.

Oh and an automatic avatar up loader could join it!

(now posted where I intended!)

Now that sounds like a cracking idea !

Oh and if there is much call for it I might knock one out using Delphi for windows (if the widget works!)

I think thats a cracking idea.....

Which mac programs will be functional with.. iphoto aperture?????

Nigel

The first version will be a widget, I have just started designing the layout of the widget itself. The idea is that you bring up your dashboard and the widget will be sat there you can then use it you upload any picture that is on your computer!

Once it is up and running I can look at extra functionality and that is why I posted this so that, like you, people could give me a few ideas of what they want.

I have personally dumped aperture in favour of lightroom.

Oh anybody know exactly who I need to speak to about the protocols for uploading pictures?

cowasaki, I've raised this in the staff room. I haven't a clue what you're speaking about so it sounds like an admin job ;)

Basically its a widget (like a control panel applet ish) just basically a small program that when run simplifies the uploading of pictures to your gallery and uploading your avatar.

The user just drags their photo into the photo box type in the title, description and tick adult or not then click UPLOAD the program will do the rest, converting the size and quality to fit the sites rules.

The basic design of the widget is complete if anyone with an Mac wants to see what I am talking about just pm me and I will email a demo version (that does not actually work yet because I only started an hour ago) but you will see the basic design...

I really struggle with resizing pictures to fit on TP, so it sounds like a brilliant idea, but please make it work for windows too...!

Thanks for the effort cowasaki (still the best username I have seen..)

I actually have far more experience programming windows machines rather than Macs but I have switched to the Mac platform. Once I have got it working for the Mac it is not difficult to get the windows version working.

I am currently working with the Mac OS SDK now for the first time. The basic design is pretty much done now. I am just working out the code for drag and drop of pictures etc then there is the code to re-size etc etc....

The problem with this will come when you try to use vBulletin's API for user login management.

And there's me, like Steveinspain, getting all exited at the prospect of something to help us computer numpties :'(

It must be possible though. Flickr managed to do it with their login system so there must be a way for vBulletin. The only service the vB software provides for content is RSS feeds. I'm pretty sure someone on vBulletin.org will have done something that required user authentication locally. Hope this doesn't scare you off. If you're a developer then I doubt it will ;)

If a browser can do it then it can be done! A simple statement BUT its one of those things, WILL it be worth doing ! Well that remains to be seen but I am working on it now. Unfortunately I have lots of experience programming in PASCAL. Most lately with Delphi enterprise in which I have written an entire application suite for the police amongst other things. Unfortunately the Apple Mac uses Objective C, a language that I have no experience of at all. As Delphi is an object based language too I have plenty of experience with this TYPE of language but I am just teaching myself Objective C!

Although I had completely finished the user interface for the widget I have abandoned this and switched to a normal application. This has many advantages and once I have completed it (hopefully I will) then I can easily create a Windoze version using Delphi!

I will post some screen shots when I get to that point and if anyone wants to Alpha/Beta test either version just let me know.

Lastly if there are any other programmers out there that think they can do it but dont have the time then any theories or information will be greatly appreciated.

One of my friends gets his first proper camera tomorrow so hopefully I'll get out and take some photos whilst explaining what to do to him but for now its back to the computer.......

Oh and if anyone is called steve and lives in Spain and can translate everything I will create a Spanish localisation too (this is just for the fun of working out how to !) :)

I'm an AS3 / AIR programmer so can lend a hand if needed.

Thats great thanks. I am just trying to get to grips with GCSE level C++/objective C at the moment trying to work out the difference between them and the Pascal/assembly/Basic that I have used previously :bonk:

Well, I am called Steve,I do live in Spain but my Spanish is still so basic that it shames me. I do have lessons, go to conversation classes, but having devoted a life to abuse and mental inactivity, I struggle with learning anything.
However, if you do do it, I will try my best, then get my Spanish teacher to correct it (this is not just for the fun, it is just a further illustration of my stupidity)

This sounds great. I see you mentioned that you've dropped Aperture in favour of lightroom, but from the sounds of things, I don't think users of aperture will be excluded if its just a drag and drop widget.

No the plan is specifically a simple window that allows you to simply upload an image. It will be some time off yet but the is the plan.

The reason I dropped Aperture is that it insists on keeping the photos in one humungous great lump on your hard drive. I wanted something that does the same but allows me to keep the photos in the structure I want and lightroom does this.

That would be great, there will only be a page of text to change and I will get volunteers to do any other languages. I should have PMd you first sorry I was just thinking aloud! :)

Did this work out? I was just thinking that an AperturetoTP plugin would awesome. Did a wee search here for something similar,...

Might have go,..
