Spotted Canon 85mm/1.8 on fleabay, £215:

Which would give me 50mm, 85mm and 135mm primes. I don't honestly use my two zooms hardly at all anyway, probably because they are so much inferior to my primes.

OR do I put the £200 towards a 400D, which even in Currys the other day was £379 and £50 cash back. I really like film, full-frame in particular, but don't have big money to spend and can see the attraction of a 400D.

What d'ya think!?

Cheers!

OK Sorry about that, force-of-habit from over on screwfix forum :(

Well, I'd personally upgrade your body before adding a lens.
I say upgrade, its not really.

I'd get the 400d simply because it will be cheaper in the long run than film!
But, have you thought of alternatives?
A 350D can be had for a lot cheaper, £230 ish, meaning you could get a DSLR right away, and the 350D is very similar to the 400d, in fact I prefer the 350d because the files are smaller due to less megapixels, and it has an extra screen for settings, compared to the single screen of the 400d.

And then for the price of a 400d you could get a 350d and an 85/1.8 :)

I'm not going to advise you one way or the other, beyond saying that I have the 85mm 1.2L, and the 1.8 version is a much faster focusing lens, and has probably 90% of the low light capability of the 1.2 version, certainly making it a better lens for action shots, and a bargain for the money. Your call though. ;)

Yeah, like CT I'm not going to urge you one way or another - I'll just point out that it would make you really happy and you'd love it. I think thats the only fair response. :)

Damnit CT, now your making me spend money I don't have!!! Doh!

so what are we talking you out of? the lens, camera or both???

Thanks for all the replies - very much appreciated.

So 90-300mm is listed for sale and 85mm will be purchased instead :)

350D body is a great idea I'd not considered for when funds permit - thank-you!

Oh well, glad everyone failed miserably to talk you out of it

yep :)

so in fact I've been talked into getting the body too

Never ask people on here to talk you out of stuff;)

:agree: They inevitably come up with really good reasons to justify spending hundreds of pounds, which make perfect sense to you but never sounds quite as compelling when telling the other half :)

Seriously - I wish I'd had the 85mm when I was doing weddings, it has to be the ultimate lens for low light work in church - fast, and at that focal length you can throw any bg oof. It's a great portrait lens too, I don't think anyone could seriously regret buying one. As long as you can still afford to eat of course! :D
