A family was left with nowhere to run when their car caught fire - in the lion enclosure at Longleat Safari Park.

"The rangers were pushing them back but they were reluctant on moving away as they looked interested."
Those Lions were thinking - Lunch!

Sphincter factor of about 15 out of 10!!

I remember sat in the car with my mum in the tiger enclosure at Longleat and one of the tigers decided to scent mark the car in front of us, even though of course we had all windows shut it still stunk...I don't think any amount of valet would have cleansed that car :puke:

Blimey! I can hardly imagine how that must have felt.

Burn to death....get ripped apart by lions?
Get ripped apart by lions....burn to death?

I think the park rangers deserve a mention. Good on them for acting so quickly.

Just seen an interview with the family on the TV, seems the Lions didn't come near, despite her young son getting out of the car a couple of times, keeper told them to stay in the car WTF !!
Now what I can't understand is why someone didn't just stop next to them open the doors and let them pile in, ok may overload the car but at least everyone would be safe for the time being

Ah but that would require two things from said potential rescuers:
1: Compassion
2: Intelligence

IMO joe public these days has neither.

You missed off no.3

3: Everyone and their mother have a smartphone and want to give the pics to the Daily Fail.......

There's also the chance (fairly unlikely but always possible with a vehicle fire) of a fairly large bang sending burning fuel in all directions. Personally, I would have taken the risk and done a rescue dash since my car's a Diesel so unlikely to suffer a major fuel fire.

Mine's petrol Nod and I would still have taken the risk to get them to safety.

ive seen loads of cars torched...the only thing ive saw go bang...is the tyres....the first thing i thought was why nobody pulled up next to them to get the family into another car

My own old car caught fire too years ago, and although it went up well, it went with a "whumph" rather than a bang. No explosion or raining down of burning 4star

My first thought was, why would anyone want to take their own car into a wildlife park?

The alternative for most people being...?

Do they not do bus tours? Failing that do as other people do and just go to a normal zoo. I'd never take my car into a wildlife park.

Well hoorah for you.
If all other people all did that, do you think places like Longleat and Woburn, with their long and fine histories, would still be going?
You makeait sound like every other punter gets his car wrecked.
Reality check.

then stick it on your bucket list and borrow an old banger misery guts :p Remember in wildlife parks animals get far greater playing space then regular zoos.

As for the above, definitely a high sphincter count on that one! Though again, why no one pulled alongside and piled them in, I'll never know. I think I would have taken the risk without even thinking about it.

Same here even if it mean damaging my own are, it's only metal afterall

Have to admit I have the advantage of access to range of bodily crap cars [albeit mechanically very sound of course] as and when I need to take one somewhere a bit ropey ;)

My I knew some parts of that London were a little rough but needing a separate car to travel there  ;)

I've had my car scented by the largest male lion
Was an experience
He came right upto the driver side then walked round the back and gave the boot a good squirt
Didn't notice any smell about an hour later after we got out

Having worked hard and spent thousands to buy a car, I take pride in my cars and see it as an unacceptable risk to have the possibility of animals climbing on my car let alone the possibility of it getting damaged. Even at a few hundred quids worth it should still be treated with respect.
As for a bucket list, don't have one and I certainly wouldn't be borrowing someone else's car to risk getting that damaged instead, that would be disrespectful to the owner, whether they cared or not.

You're putting a material possession ahead of a life experience.

That's a very shallow and disappointing way to live your life

Me thinks you've heard a horror story too many, I've driven round several safari parks in several cars and never had any damage done

its the monkeys that do the damage..they're like mini formula 1 pit crew :ROFLMAO:

my cars crap and i'm not bothered by a bit of superficial stuff getting damaged, its worth it to see the kids faces as the monkeys look through the sun roof...i've only ever lost one of the nozzles on the rear window washer and i've been through knowsley safari park loads of times over the years...if your that worried there is a fenced off bit were you can drive through but the monkeys cant get to you

The monkeys is the most fun :D seeing how high they jump when the sun roof they're sad on suddenly moves or wipers they're about to pull moves :D

Foibles.
Yes that's one word for it.

Their usual trick after they get startled by something is to remove it so it can't startle them again. Not so easy with a sunroof but wiper blades, washer nozzles, east to chew out and a PITA when you need them to wipe the monkey sh!t off the screen!

I wonder what restrictions car hire companies put on safari park access? At a guess they just charge double cost to replace any missing parts!

It's a classic false dichotomy.

Stay in the car and you are all likely to die (even if it doesn't explode, fire's really bad for you), get out and see if overfed park lions can be bothered to wake up their hunting instinct.

Plus, I know I can outrun a small child :)

Enterprise car rental specifically exclude safari parks in their teeny print...or at least they used to.

They can and they will, I've watched captive big cats hunting birds and small critters that have strayed into their runs
Go to whipsnade and watch the cheetahs/lynx stalking the prey animals the other side of the wire

Going to a wildlife park is hardly what I what call a life experience. If I wanted that experience, I'd go to Africa and see the animals in their own habitat.
Obviously my parents were wrong in teaching me to take care of what is mine and show the same respect for that, which belongs to others.

Lions are far lazier than cheetahs ;)

In any case that's not the point. The percentage chance that a lion will chase and catch and kill you is far less than the percentage chance that sitting in a burning car will kill you. Doesn't matter how high it is, it's less.

I remember being at West Midlands Safari in the lion enclosure one of the solid panels had fallen of the wire fence and the big male was stood looking through the fence at the Zebra ;) knew exactly what was on his mind

Last time we visited the Dartmoor Zoological Park there was a sheep winding the tigers up. The 3 tigers were pacing up and down the top of their enclosure or lying watching the sheep and licking their lips. Poor bu99ers - it was the lions' feeding day so the tigers were on a fast day! The cheetah was watching the sheep as well, up through the tiger enclosure.

The lynx at Whipsnade, especially the kitts, get very excited when the mara mara or wallabies wonder near their enclosure to feed. Of course the pacing lynx are totally ignored by the wise ones ;)

Those little Mara do make me chuckle.

Yes. You are right. In my opinion your parents would have been better teaching you that material things shouldn't be put before life experiences.
