Taking bird pictures

Hi Guys,
I am interested in bird photography too. I bought a Canon 450D last year and am using the Tamron 70-300 lens which came with it. I have found your various comments above very interesting and look forward to trying out some of these ideas.
I think the lens is holding me back so it's time for an upgrade. I am considering a Canon 100-400L or 300 L. Both with IS. Which would you choose?

Thanks and regards
Ian

Hi :wave:Ian

I have the 100- 400L and love it:love:
Certainly I have found the extra reach better but do wonder whether a 300 with a TC might be better

Thanks Robin.

I keep talking and looking at the 100-400 and the 300. The wife keeps saying how indecisive I am. But at least with all my procrastinating she is getting used to the idea of me spending such a huge amount of money on a lens. I must remember to employ this tactic again in the future!

I've reached the conclusion that if I'm shooting birds then I don't need IS.

Further to the excellent advice given here I've realised that sitting/standing quietly in suitable clothing or camo is the best way. I certainly don't want to hand hold a longish lens/camera combination for that length of time.

So it goes on the tripod, ergo, no need for IS. Both my non IS lenses (300L and 400L) give great results, but the the 300 is really superfluous now and will have to go.

It depends which 300 you are talking about, the 300/2.8 would do better IMO (is good at either 420/4 or 600/5.6) but I doubt that the 300/4 with a 1.4tc would be any better than the zoom.

Thanks Roy, yes i meant the 2.8, hey ho I can dream:D
Maybe my numbers will come up:love:

I started with a 100-400 which my wife has kindly taken over as I got a the new style Sigma 2.8 300mm. I wanted the canon but got the Sigma at a great price and overall find it superb, fast and sharp.

Personaly for 1/2 the price I would opt for a Sigma second hand. Its not got IS though.
