Hello all :) I recently picked up a lovely Halina 35x - gorgeous as it is, the focussing/aperture ring is very very stiff. I tried spraying some WD40 on it and trying to get it to drip between the rings, but to limited success.
I'm pondering taking it apart and cleaning it - can anyone give me any tips? What kind of grease should I use to re-lube it?
 
i know NOTHING about repair/refurbish of lens/cameras

but my first thought was that WD40 and grease dont belong anywhere near optics..:shrug:

i had my Canon A1 overhauled by Miles Whitehead - superb and reasonable

dont know if he does lens though..............:D

He's got both my OM2ns at the moment, looking forward to getting them back at the end of the week.

Asked him about V system Hasselblads and Zeiss lenses (with shutters) and he does them so I wouldn't be surprised if he did others.
 
about time he offered TP a discount........:lol:

He certainly quotes for them, I just need to sort out which I'm going to send to him and how best to package them up :)

I have four lenses and a camera body that I want to send over; can anyone recommend a courier who might be more reasonably priced than RM?

I can see the LOL, but I introducesd Miles work to the forum and his prices are the best you can find for his type of quality work, having said that my last two CLA,s with shutter jammed have had to go back, so there is also a down side sometimes.

I would be surpised if Miles knew what a discount was as his price struture is about his costs and living wage only, IMO,:thumbs:

If the cost of shipping is more than the petrol cost of driving them yourself, then go and take them and meet Miles and discuss what you want done face to face, he is a really great guy.:thumbs:

The things needed to repair this camera probably cost more than just buying a replacement, the Halina 35x wasn't exactly a good camera so you can pick them up super cheap, there's a few on rocky cameras for £8.99 so you'd probably get one on eBay for under £20.

Looking at its design taking the lens apart wouldn't be too hard (hard to say without haven't handled one before). The thing about lenses with focus rings that turn the front element is putting them back together with infinity focus intact.

Intriguing idea and I'm off this week after all.

The kit I want to send over weighs in at approximately 5kg so that'd be £23.60 by RMSD insured, whereas at roughly £6.00 per gallon of petrol I could be there and back for about the same money.

A big positive is that I don't have to worry about packing everything up or my gear being trashed in the back of a van and a drawn-out insurance claim arguing about how to value second-hand camera gear.

Good idea, I'll give Miles a call later today :thumbs:
 
mothdust, Sorry to hear that your Halina 35X is not fully working. I replied to your original post when you acquired the camera, as I still have one. As regards repair, I should think that would cost more than the camera is worth. Might be worth looking for another.

I quite agree, I was very pleasantly surprised, he charged me £40 plus postage for each OM2n body, by sending them together it cost me £90 total. I was paying similar for a CLA in the late 80s.
