I'm going snowboarding in a few weeks, and natrually i'm gonna take all my kit.

What are airlines like when it comes to tripods being taken on as hand luggage? I would keep it in a bag, but do they need to be checked in?

I don't need to take it on with me, but it's more practical and i'd rather not check it in my big bag of stuff going in the hold or whatever, might get broken (yeah, it only cost me £7 but i'd be bummed if it broke...no tripod for my whole trip. I'm planning to do some nice sunset photos and long exposures and some action shots which the tripod would be usefull for).

Check with the airline, it would be a bummer to get your big bag checked in and then get told you can't take it as cabin baggage and have to leave it behind. Personally I wouldn't even bother trying, just pack it well in your big bag.

Hi

I always take mine and pack it in my big suitcase, and I've never had any probs its always made it in 1 piece, just pack it were your case is the sturdiest and it should be OK

Dave

The rule is, 1 piece of hand luggage. (unless you fly first or business class)

So your tripod would be your one piece, and you would not be able to have 'any' other bags on your person, and I assume you wish to hand carry your camera.

I always shove my tripod in my suitcase, I just pack it inbetween my clothes.

If space is tight, then I just buy an el-cheapo tripod when I get to where I am going, normally get one for around a tenner.

OT ........... Where you going Skiing. Me and the Family are going to The Grand Masif and the tiny hamlet of |Sixt Fer A Cheval near Samoens.

I can't wait.

I pack my tripod in the suitcase by the way.

I have my manfrotto strapped onto the bottom of my tamrac. Went to america last month with the tamrac as hand luggage and had no problems at all taking on the plane :)

I'd have thought providing the closed length did'nt exceed their hand luggage sizes it would be ok. But as for additional to your other hand luggage thats a different matter, you'd need to check with the airline. If it's Ryanair then you'll get ripped off for extra luggage charges.

Don't mean to be rude but is the £7.00 tripod enough to support the gear in your sig?

I've got mine tucked away in my padded golf bag!

I would pack it in your case / rucksack. I have been to USA, Poland & Germany in the past year and was not allowed to take my tripod as hand luggage even when strapped to my camera backpack. I had even more trouble with my monopod which they told me could be used as a weapon. Its a pain but in todays world it's how it is and the best thing to do is smile and do as asked. Have a good trip.

Chris

Wrapped mine with a couple of straps and checked it in - no problems.

I've always strapped my monopod to the outside of my rucksack thingy. Never had any problem with BA/Virgin/Air France/Easy/Ryan

Dear me how things have changed- I remember going on mountain climbing trip to Morroco with a bunch of ice axes. We wanted to put them in the hold but the airline said they would damage the other suitcases so they made us hand carry them!

If you want an alternative, I can recommend the Joby Gorilla pod zoom model.
