Taking a DSLR to India - convince me (or dissuade me!)

Yes do take your D50 with say a 28 200 lens kept in a small camera bag.
I have been to the Ukraine several times and took my "old" Minolta 7i it hsve served me well there. But I wished I had taken my Nikon. So next time I go,I will be taking that with me.
 
Best thing to get for train travel security when you want to sleep is one of those steel wire mesh containers that you can padlock to a seat leg or something. I have one that can hold my big Lowepro Computrekker bag.

My apologies for confusing you with the OP. Also, my apologies for not reading the entire thread before posting. I understand everyone has different opinions, approaches, and priorities, but this thread asked for others opinions. I have given mine. I also notice that you have neglected to comment on other people who have responded in a similar vain to me.

I also don't think it is now polite to continue this discussion as it now takes away from the OPs thread.

Thanks for all the replies peoples.

Been having trouble deciding but have finally decided to take the camera with me. I will be taking 3 lens: 10-20, 30 1.4 and the soon to be purchased 18-135. The 18-135 has its problems, but its nothing a bit of time in LR can't fix. The useful range should make up for it!

None of the lens are particularly big or heavy so hopefully it wont weigh too much.

I hope it pays off!
 
Always take your DSLR everywhere! for travel I like to have my 24/105 as a work horse but I'll take as much as I can, speed light and all filters too.
 
Going to go against the grain here. Travel light. Very light. Think Canon S90/S95. I recently lugged a D300s/10-20/50-1.4/18-200/Tripod across south america. Regret it? You bet. How many times did I want to use my friends point and shoot rather than taking my bag off my back, unzipping, sweating cos of the gear in the heat etc. etc.? All the time. Plus I had to 'gear-sit' whenever we were just chilling out - you cant just eat a meal without letting your guard down. You need something you can quickly whip out of your pocket. S95 fits the bill.
 
If you're going to India I'd hope the camera was around your neck and not in your bag. You're going to India. You're not going to a lawless country. Sure you need to stay safe, but you can over do it at times. If professional photojournalists can go to India and take stunning photographs with their kit then so can you. But then again, I did have a small and large camera with me to cover all the bases.

IMO.
