Hi guys.

I'm going on a trip to Malaysia for two weeks with university in April of next year. As where we're going is 150km north of the equator it will be very hot, very humid and torrential rainfall that can pour down without notice.

Now, I don't intend on using my camera in rain so that's not too much of a concern. It's the humidity that scares me.

Does anyone have any experience taking their cameras to an environment such as this and did you encounter any problems such as condensation in the camera body/lens? What sort of thing should I do to ensure nothing terrible happens?

I know that I shouldn't change the lens which is why I will only be taking the 24-70L.

Cheers.

I've been to Borneo and Tortuguero, Costa Rica (up to 200 inches of rain a year) with a 450D and didn't think about it - perhaps I should have!

As Freecom says you'll be fine.

I wouldn't worry to much I was in costa rica last year with my 7d and 100-400 L and it is fine the only thing I would suggest is maybe a rain cover and a few packets of silica gel in the bag just in case

Ok thanks people.

I would have not be worried but have been told by others that there could be problems. I will just keep a ton of silica gel in the bag.

Cheers.

are the 7d and lens not weather sealed.
the lens is weather sealed and does not need a front filter like some other canon lenses do for weather sealing.
from the canon site.

Worrying over nothing - taken my kit long distance several times - no problems at all...

IMO, superfluous. Although the 7D isn't classed as weather sealed but weather "resistant", the L lens is weather sealed. I've shot in Malaysia with a D40 and 18-55 kit lens, which are all about as sealed as an open container, and it's fine. The combo you have are designed to take far tougher weather conditions. Seriously, you'll be fine. Instead of worrying 6 months (!) in advance, plan where you are going to go :)

Thanks for putting my mind at rest.

It's a university trip so the places I'll be going is predetermined but I'll be traveling through sprawling metropolises like Kuala Lumpar and prime rainforest alike so should provide opportunity for lots of nice shots.

Don't mean to worry you but I spent 3 months on a remote Fijian island this summer. Couldn't escape the humidity at all and the 7D didn't make it. Suffered internal corrosion, canon refuse to fix FOC as it only made to cope to 80% humidity which is stupid! But lesson learnt, take some silica and pack it in there nightly or whenever not using.

Thanks for sharing your experience Luke. What an expensive lesson that is :(

Gonna take lots of silica with me and probably get some insurance. Any recommendations?

A big adgreed here, spend a lot of time abroad with my camera a few years ago, sealed bags with lots of silica gel bags, and every night take camera & lens out,and give then a good wipe down :)

Ps when Frank Laning was doing his book the Jungle,he said he when thought 12 Nikon bodies, and most of his lens got fugis in them

Get insurance it's a big investment to loose. I just got back from Sri Lanka lugging around 4ks worth of gear without it would have been scary in the great scheme of things it's not that much money.
