This is purely for fun!

Which awfully composed frame would you say was taken with an umpteenth hand Vivitar manual focus 24mm lens bought from ebay at £40 and which was taken with a Nikon 24-70 f/2.8G bought brand new?

Frame 2 (Click for larger version)

:thinking::naughty::thinking:

The winner is awarded with......virtual cake. :D

and it was frame number 1 taken with the Vivitar MF:

No 2 is the vivitar I recon, though at that resolution it's virtually impossible to tell

I'd say frame 1 is the £40 lens
Frame 2 is the nikkon £1200 jobbie

I would say the first shot is taken with the more expensive one.

My reasoning is the wall bends at the top on the second shot. Although it's a zoom at an extreme, I don't think that should happen with the Nikon. It's seems sharper with a bit more contrast.

Frame 1 is a better photo, compositionally is better and marginally sharper. I would say that is the prime lens.

I, however, would have a much better chance of nailing the shot with autofocus helping me...

Really hard to tell, but would go with number 1 being the Nikon

Number 2 has to be it, as it has better contrast and colour than the number 1, and from experience I can tell you lack of contrast and colour rendition is the main problem that older lenses tend to suffer, probably due to the lack of coatings available 'back then'.

If I'm wrong, I'll eat my non existant hat... lol.

EDIT: Number 1 also seems to have a funny colour cast (greenish) going on, which is another thing I have noticed about older lenses.

1st one looks like it could be a vivitar. Why,.. I think its the bokeh, it isn't as smooth as 2 around the carpeted area. although tough to tell. Then again neihter of them could and your just tricking us ;)

Number 1 is the £1200
Number 2 is the £40

Isn't it just mate, both shots have close to identical sharpness.

Apart from the Nikon being far easier to use AF and all, I'll be having a go a little more often with the Vivitar.

Shall I tell which ones which now? :D

I'd say 1 was the Vivitar - looks like a shallower DOF, possibly closer lens to subject focus?
Or I could be wrong. :D
Either way, I like em both!

Pure guess frame 1 old lens frame 2 news lens due to the depth of field. ?

Hi,

looks like you bought a right dog there :D

Mike.

Im going to go with No1 being the Nikon. With its awesome DOF...

Does it help saying that you can see one of the lenses sitting in the background if you look very closely............;)

There's certainly no lens in the background, Maddie may have left here thermos on the floor again but I promise there are no clues within the frames ;)

<------knows this, but just wanted to see how many people would stick their noses right against the screen to seek it out :naughty:

I promise not to do it again, nor refer to myself in the third person like that again either ;)

Ok, I'm posting a screen grab from lightroom to show which is which, I'll re-edit the first post and pop it in there...give us a sec...

First I think is the cheaper, second the more expensive

Nooo way.

I think I am infected or something. I have a real taste for cheaper alternatives at the minute - especially for lomo types! (not that this is lomo thomas)!

interesting results! looking back, i think number 2 has better whites.
completely off topic too but you have such a cool dog :D

:lol: I have to admit I did nearly cry a little when looking at the two...

Cheers mate, I'll pass your kind words along to the young madame.

Nice one Tomas!

Interesting how much lighter the wall looks on that Nikon lens! Same exposure but just looks about 1/2 stop lighter.
