Take a View Landscape Photographer of the Year

Want to get into it!!!!

How different is it to actually shoot?
Any advice ...... What to and what not to look out for.....

Seems to be invitation only sadly. Some lovely pics on there.

Well if I can invited I'm sure you can :naughty:. Agree there's some nice stuff. Did you take yours in Jan? I was there middle of Jan and it looks similar weather conditions.

Winning images should be in the Times tomorrow with everything being announced on Monday.

Is this true? There's been a lot of chatter on Twitter but the TAV website says November...

I hear the winning image(s) are up on the Times website ... I think I've seen the overall winner (2nd hand information as I don't have a Times account) .. goodness me there's going to be some mad debate when folks wake up :)

There's a few pictures here:

Lovely stuff and that overall winner is a beauty. It seems a shame that The Times don't seem to make more of the competition seeing as they get to share the news first

Some crackers in there but some just not to my taste I suppose, don't want to disagree with any of the winners just in case they are on here [emoji23]

If not say anything to on the internet I wouldn't say to their faces.

The times overall winner sea waves deserved to win the grand prize. It's a fabulous image. I really didn't like the "overall" winner. It really isn't to my tastes bit then pretty much none of them have been. I liked Andy Farrers winner last year.

I prefer a more conventional chocolate box image, what I'd say in the winners favour is it's a very striking and different image that people will talk about.

As Oscar Wilde said there's only one worse thing than being talked about and that's not being talked about. People will talk about this image and some will love it, others like me will hate it.

Of all the glencoe and Rannoch moor shots entered I find it galling those were the best they picked.

In my opinion I prefer Tony Jacksons shot of Rannoch Moor, just don't get the overall winner but as you say Steve it will get folk talking, good thing for us is that there's quite a few shots taken in Scotland [emoji106]

The winner is excellent I think as is the one from Dougie Cunningham. I also love the Sunday Times choice by Rachael Talibart. I think that the Lesley Smith one is also good but for some reason it really bothers me that it does not seem level although it may be that the ground is not level but it looks like the houses and walls are also leaning over. I feel like that I have sort of seen the Glencoe traffic trail before though the one on the Times is still really well done. I am looking forward to seeing the book.

I'm not sure what to make of the overall winning. I like the intention of it, if it was indeed an intention to capture it that way, but I think some elements are not required and composition is out.

There are some beautiful images there (in the Sunday Times mag). Very nice indeed. I see that they are picking more unusual, different-looking images which I guess is obvious if you're sifting 20,000 or so.

Not sure how anyone couldn't appreciate the winning picture and the photographer has plenty of other versions on Flickr to suggest it's not an accident! He's clearly a skilled wildlife photographer and has nailed it there, it's full of drama and tells a story. The Lines in the Land picture is the best ever I think. Thought Jake's would do well! - well done!

I agree with you, it's a great image, different, which seems to be a trend with LPOTY. It's like marmite, but as ever, art will be subjective.
I hope people don't give the poor lad too much hate.

To be honest it's also disappointing to see the negative comment about the Glencoe and Rannoch Moor images. Because they don't feature reflections or bright blue skies it's galling? Best to appreciate all weather if you're a landscape photographer. All those pictures are top drawer in my view, artistic photography rather than record photography

Someone is always going to dislike an image, it's inevitable. The problem arises when people get on the hate train out of spite, rather than of disdain at what has made it to the book. We all like different things, which is good, it would be boring if we all wanted the same image to win.

I love Rachael Talibart's wave image, top quality imagery by her. I'm just honoured to be in the Times!

Yours and hers were good. IMHO hers should have won, with yours at highly commended.

The others the more I look at really in my view are not very good at all. The image of the red road flats reminds me of a bad readers snap into a local paper.

Out of all the glencoe images that would have entered I'm flabbergasted the best they picked was Karen Deakins and Daniel Panecas ones. I think they're not particularly good at all

It's all personal opinion though. Bear in mind that we've seen 11 images, there are a lot more to come tomorrow. I can't wait for the book to arrive.

I take it only winning images and commended images make it in to the book?

It seems a shame that you can't seem to appreciate any style of photography that differs from your own. I doubt these people will mind though, they're in the book and I guess someone isn't

Yes, commended and higher get into the book. Plus winners of the other awards (VisitBritain, Sunday Times etc.) There is 153 images according to Take a View on Twitter earlier today.

I would like to buy that although I may be a tad jealous, all this photography chat has got me thinking about taking a cheeky day off work soon to get away somewhere [emoji106]

It's a bigger shame that you can't be critical just because someone says an image is good. Not all of us pander to something just because someone else does.

I'm happy for them but given the calibre of images and other togs that didn't make the short list or the book I think something is amiss.

Is there a reason why there's quite a few shots taken in Scotland or is it just because it's such a photogenic place? [emoji23]

Based on the online gallery, I'd say that's a strong collection and only a few I'd quibble about. I too really like Rachel's wave photos, it's be interesting to learn what it took to take them.

Well I realise taste is subjective, but I really don't like the overall winning shot, and much prefer most of the others.

Try to catch one of her talks, she explains the whole thing in them (well, she did at patchings art festival this year)

Is it bad that my favourite landscape photo is the one of Grangemouth Oil Refinery.

Did some one on here take "Battersea Power Station and tracks"? Also a fantastic shot.

Yours is a lovely image and well deserved praise from friends who saw it yesterday too!
Thank you Sam, and very well done to you too.
Extremely chuffed to bits with my Commendation! First competition I've entered as well!
Well done :)

Get it done, if it's inspiring you to get out with the camera it can't be a bad thing :)

Had a look through them and for me it's a strong set. Really diverse, and a strong sense of seeing the subtleties of the landscape rather than the big wide view all the time. The winning image I also think is excellent although I can see why it polarises opinion somewhat

The full set are a lot better than the times features.

My favourite if I judged it would be Martin steeles commended shot, followed by the times winner then Scott Robertsons buachaille etive mor.

I liked Damien wards image and James pedlars. To me they're really classy quality images. I don't like Martin Birks massively but I do see why it made the grade. I really don't like the dark image that got runner up for living the view adult category and the adult urban view winner is imho a disgrace. Finbarr Falons image is really special and if I were him I'd be seething that his image lost out to that.

Just ordered it, I expected Scott Robertson's Binnein Beag to do well, as it is a cracking photo, the highly commended Lines in the landscape by David Queenan looks superb too. It seems, from looking through the winners online that the standard seems higher every year, so well done to anyone who made it into the book.
