Yes
Work have offered to buy me a tablet (the gadget presumably, not the cyanide type). Don't know much about them really.

What I need for work-
Decent camera/video capability
3g connectivity & WiFi
Something that talks easily to the PCs at work
Something that bluetooths easily to other devices
GPS- proper GPS, not assisted. I use NavFree for work which is stored maps so no silly data use
Works email is gmail based so needs to be gmail friendly

What I would like for me ;)
Decent screen to watch films
Compatible with flash sites (cricfree etc)
Compatible with iplayer, 4od, itv player etc

I'm not a fan of Apple based on what I have seen ie cant bluetooth certain devices, issues with works PCs, won't display flash sites etc but open to suggestions.

Any recommendations?

I had a Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 running Android (gingerbread) and an iPad 2 at the same time for a project at work..

The Samsung had much better general connectivity than the iPad. The screen was excellent and it came with some office type apps as standard, so could use it straightaway. Plugged into a PC via a USB port, it was easy to transfer file on and off.

Oddly perhaps, after playing with both for months, I gravitated towards and in the end preferred to use the iPad. When I handed the project and tablets over to a colleague near the end of last year, I found myself without a tablet for the first time in two years. So I went and bought an iPad 4.

With iFunbox on a PC, transferring files on and off iOS devices is fairly easy, but you still need to have iTunes installed too.

cant bluetooth certain devices

no bother here with an old ipad2 and new iphone 5s. the only issue ive ever had was with a REALLY old parrot hands free.

issues with works PCs

such as?

won't display flash sites

not a huge deal, flash is being phased out by most with non-flash version of sites available (youtube/iplayer etc all have non-flash). and for any really backwards sites there are a tonne of free flash compatible browser apps.

Apple are much more fussy about their Bluetooth stack than Android devices. I don't know the exact details, but I know that Apple devices will not pair with Bluetooth devices that have not been formally licensed by Apple.

The company I worked for until the end of last year did not have a licence for iTunes, so the connectivity functionality to iOS devices was very limited.

Blutooth issues I have experienced is Iphone users being unable to send stuff vis bluetooth to me, don't know why but several iphone owners have told me this and was wondering if it is the same with ipad
The works PCs don't seem to like talking to iphones. When plugged in via a cable they don't get recognised and its been near impossible to get stuff off them. Don't want this to happen with a tablet.
Could you say how a site like cricfree can be viewed on ipad?

should add that its one or the other, can't be tablet x for one thing and y for another!

These progs are not installed on works PCs and wont be in the future.

Like I say I've owned iDevices for 3 years now and only come across 1 issue with an OLD hands free.

Company shouldn't need anything special licence wise for iTunes as far as I'm aware. If there was we'd be stuffed as it's pre installed on all our macs.. :D

As above, only the one Bluetooth problem.

Define "talk to"? Obviously you'll need iTunes for the driver to be installed.

Depends what "stuff" you want to get off? Depending on the app you can get to its files through iTunes. You always have Dropbox if all else fails..

I'm not sure we're allowed to discuss use of cricfree here but one of the flash enabled browsers i mentioned before should help.

Are you saying iTunes won't be installed? Have you spoken to your IT team? We allow it to be installed, it's no big deal however we block access to the store and for streaming for bandwidth reasons.

Depends what you're trying to interface with and the actual application you're trying achieve/create. As I say, Apple devices are less open than Android devices. I've had a number of Bluetooth devices that would not connect with the iPad. My understanding is that it's not possible for iOS devices to do peer to peer file transfers by Bluetooth. It's also not possible currently to use Airdrop from iOS to OSX.

The (large global) company I worked for used PC machines with locked down windows OS, effectively customised for them. Only a standard range of software was allowed, iTunes was not on the list and the IT folks wouldn't make it available either.

Outside of that environment, as mentioned above, once you have iTunes on a PC, the iFunbox programme allows access to the iPhone or iPad in a more conventional Windows Explorer/File Manager viewer.

Plug an Android device into a PC and it appears as an external drive in the usual way (need to configure the USB setting on the device itself).

So my comments are based on my experience, clearly YMMV

Issues I have experienced several times with apple devices-
When trying to BT to anything other than another iphone it doesnt seem to work- cant connect/send whatever
Where I work there are staff terminals which have more lenient security measures and customer terminals. Anyone using customer terminals can't just plug in a device and transfer stuff. Android devices seem to be more likely to be recognised by both staff and user PCs. The workaround for apple users was to email themselves then FWD it onto me.
Zero chance of itunes being installed across the board.
Just a ballache really!

This is the issue at my work I would guess
