I want to treat the mother in law to a simple inexpensive tablet so as she can skype everyone and have a play on the web. A laptop would put her off as looking too tech, looked at this one...

Its nice and cheap with a ten inch screen but don't know if its a crap one?? as I say its mainly to use skype on??

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Steve.

I can't open your link , but generally the very cheap ones from manufacturers people have never heard of, have crap screens (as regards their touch sensitiveness) - the extremly cheap ones sometimes have resitive rather than capacitive which is old tech , plus they often have slow processors which aren't great for skype

at the budget end Imo its generally better to get a 7" screen backed up by better technology , and imo the best of the 'budget' ones are generally the nexus or the Tesco hudl - hudls are currently £99 and if you have Tesco vouchers you get £10 off for every £5 - meaning theoretically its 50 quid in vouchers

the other option is second hand/reconditioned as you can get good deals on stuff like ipad 2s (though not as cheap as hudls et al)

I would look at the Hudle. Bit more expensive, but backed by a company that has good customer service ( I speak from experience ). Plus you can go into a store and try it out first. At £99 not a bad price

I've opened the link now and i wouldnt touch that with a barge pole - spend 20 quid more and get a hudl

Tesco hudl ideal for price and ease of use! Use one daily for work and does what it says on the tin.

I think i will go take a look at the tesco hudle, thanks for the advice guys.

iPads are dumbed down enough to suit the elderly and 2-year olds.

Hudl is way too small for somebody that presumably can't read tiny text.

Actually that was what I liked about the thing I linked to, it had a nice big screen

the difference between text on a 10 inch screen and a 7" screen is that much and you can magnify the text anyway. (and if shes pricipally skyping text won't be a major consideration)

I'm not saying a hudl/nexus would be better than an ipad - but a 10" ipad cannot really be considered a budget option. (unless you pick up a bargain on an old one on the bay or e)

Thing is really there arent any serious budget options with 10 inch screens (all the really cheap ones have crap screens that will frustrate the hell nout of her by more tap detection , plus they mostly have crap processors which will also be a problem for video heavy applications like skype.)

there is the nexus 10 -2 which isnt bad (times ive used a mates one) - but at £250-300 its not really a budget item either
