OK OCF gurus....

I was taking a high key shot of a flower and using two flashguns on optical triggering from the onboard flash (The batteries in my ebay triggers were dead). Things were going well, slight adjustments to bring things in and then all of a sudden the flashes werent in the shot, it was lit only by the on board flash.
Even going back to previously good settings, lengthening the time etc made no difference.
The flashes were firing, and recharging, but must have been firing before or after the shutter opening.
I gave it up as a bad job after a while......

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the onboard camera was firing a pre-flash, which set off the other flashes before the shutter opened.

I'm assuming that you disabled the pre-flash but the camera decided you didn't mean it and reinstated it...

Canon camera? :)

My thoughts exactly. Optical triggers really are the last resort nowadays. If you use off camera, try to switch over to radio triggers. Yongnuo RF602 or the new range RF603 are cheap as chips, and is very reliable.
