Maybe I'm being overly cynical but having received another invite to join the SWPP I had a browse through their website. For an organisation that claims:

SWPP & BPPA has a strict Code of Ethics that is rigidly enforced to ensure the consumer is not only hiring a talented photographer, but also one with impeccable business practices

you'd think they'd at least use a secure/encrypted page for membership application so your personal + credit card details aren't exposed to the world when you submit them.

Do you know anyone that has experience of joining them? I've just received an invite too & was mulling it over - will have to look into some reviews first though (& not pay online )

I'm curious to know how they can ensure the standards of the photographers if the only membership requirement is paying the fees so how does the SWPP back up statements like this:

There are hundreds of photographers in the world to choose from. How do you decide?

All photographers are not alike! True Professional Photographers belong to the SWPP & BPPA

This association, founded in 1989, boasts membership of only the finest Photographers.

Looking at the togs in my region about half don't show any of the SWPP qualifications. There is a few on there that I know to produce good work but there's also a few weekend warriors who have got a less than sterling reputation as well.

As with all self-reg bodies it's just a Code of Conduct thing - open to as much abuse as any other

SWPP seems to me to be trying to make sure anyone wishing to be a Pro can become one through a body as such, whereas some of the others only accept people when they can already prove to be Pros

Membership of any of them all still means you can be a right t**t though as most clients wouldn't know where to complain anyway

I do agree that their "only the finest Photographers" is a wee bit off the mark though; their support has been great by me so far so for my use - I can't knock them

I've dropped them an email listing my concerns, be interesting to see what they say. I think the main issue I have is the way they promote the togs as uber talented but don't seem to offer any guarantees to back the claim up.

Same as pxl8 I've had profound doubts about the SWPP for a number of years. The icing on the cake for me was last year when they renewed my membership without even consulting me and issued me a bill for over a hundred pounds I think it was. When I refused to pay (I had no intention of continuing membership based on not one single referral) they started getting heavy and threatening court action. So I looked into the matter myself only to find they were using unlawful contractual terms to tie me in for another year, and had the nerve to question my integrity by stating I had signed to those terms, regardless of their lawfulness (the terms incidentally were unenforceable in an English Court) so I told them the membership was best placed where the sun doesn't shine.
Onto the actual value of their organisation and its so called qualifications: If Joe Bloggs the plumber puts down his spanners and picks up a camera, by joining SWPP he is entitled to use their initials after his name as some kind of quality mark or measure of his professionalism, simply by paying a joining fee. This, to my mind, certainly does not make the plumber an overnight photographer and is basically highly misleading to the market. It has also undermined faith by the public in such qualifications and has caused untold harm to the industry they purport to support.
I made an enquiry about SWPP's programmes of qualification via the L, A and F grades of professionalism, with nothing but a pointer to my website. Having tackled the RPS' grading structures before I expected to have to produce at least 10 final prints to be judged by a Board. To my astonishment my L 'qualification' by way of certificate arrived by post a few days later. They had never so much as seen a single photograph of mine, apart from my website. I concluded very quickly that it wasn't worth the paper written on, because to my mind, wedding photography more so than perhaps any other types of photography, is based on absolute trust and getting the job right first time (the wedding party cannot exactly come back next week if you get it wrong). So to present such a 'qualification' to my customers I felt would be less than trustworthy knowing what I knew, and I have long since discarded it.
I would strongly recommend SWPP is disregarded by anyone seeking to operate honestly and with integrity. I would also recommend going down the BIPP or MPA routes instead, or even the RPS route, all of which have value and meaning unlike SWPP qualifications or initials that can simply be purchased via annual membership. It is hardly suprising the market is in such flux still with weekend warriors operating and presenting themselves as professionals using SWPP's initials and presenting them as some kind of merit based system which they are clearly not. Sooner or later someone will initiate a legal action against them under the Misrepresentation Act and will wipe the floor with them.
In my oppinion they have done serious damage to the credibility of the industry and I would actively discourage anyone from going down their route.:bang:

I should qualify my statement above. After complaining to several local photographers the reasonable response came 'well what are you doing about it?' As a result I set up our own organisation which operates online and seeks to bring work to photographers who have joined with us. We do not operate a 'qualificatoin scheme' because these I believe are well and truly covered by highly professional organisations such as MPA, RPS and BIPP. It's already a crowded market place. I was sick and tired of spending serious money on marketing that simply did not work though, including SWPP, who didn't upload my details to their website for several months after joining meaning anyone searching there wouldn't find me anyway.
So I am very pleased a year on that we are having real success and that highly professional photographers are joining with us as our service develops.
