Switchover? D700 Vs. 5Dii

Im currently shooting on a 40D that has far oustayed its welcome. From september i'll be going full time as a tog and am planning to upgrade to a 5Dii or a D700. I have a relatively large amount of Canon gear (17-40,70-200,2x 430EX etc) but am willing to sell off the lot to move over to the D700 as it appears to be vastly better for a lower price than the 5Dii. Are there any opinions on the matter? I'll be shooting in venues and clubs mainly, meaning low light peformance is important aswel as a very good AF system.

Imho, you've answered your own question there :) Personally I would get a D700 or a S/H D3, but obviously I have a slight bias. The 5D II is a winning camera, but for what you want I would suggest the D700 is a better choice.
 
I had this choice to make too. The 5DII has awesome resolution, but less reliable AF. The High iso performance isn't much worse than the D700. If 12mp is enough for you the D700 is a great camera.
 
12mp should be fine for most people. Unless you need a studio camera when I guess the canon or d3x will be the choice. For low light the d700 is hard to beat, and everywhere I read, the nikon is better af.
 
12mp is fine for repro purposes. AF on D700 is vastly superior - Canon dropped a clanger with the closely grouped AF points when they have such a good sensor....
 
I'd go D700 as well. I've owned both and find 12mp plenty for printing up to 30"x20" and the superior AF, build, ergonomics and iso more than make up for the difference in resolution. I found the biggest files a pain, they slowed th computer down and needed to be printed huge to take advantage of the resolution.

I also much prefer the flash system on the nikons...

I faced a similar decision a while ago. I chose Canon on the basis of the lenses I wanted. 5D2 and D700 are both excellent, and have different strengths - basically image quality vs speed.

5D2 is in fact cheaper than a D700, and when you add up the total cost of swapping all your gear, you'll need some very compelling reasons to change to Nikon.
 
it a hard one here, you have alot of canon gear which would be nice to go straight for a canon, but i think you should go try both and see which you like as alot of people said the 5d has awsome picture quality but i have never found it to have twice the detail of the d700, iso on both is awsome with the d700 having the edge but then the 5d does hav more mps producing noise. ,
as for af well if you play with a d700 you will wont the af.

I have owned both and given the choice again, I would go for the Nikon D700. The high ISO and AF performance in much better. Choice of built in flash and slave trigger is also nice to have. 12mp is enough I think, with the 5D mkII, I ran out of hard disk space very very quickly. The only thing I would miss is that the 5D mkII does nice full hd videos.

Nikon has also come out with a lot of nice primes recently (I chose to switch to Canon because of the choice of prime lenses). But now, not only is Nikon releasing new high end primes, but they are revamping their mid ranged ones too. I bought the new 50mm 1.8G not long ago, it's a great, new design lens, for not much money :)
 
Im definately feeling the D700, The majority of my work is going to be shows so low light is absolutely key, but being able to produce massive prints isnt really such an issue, 12mp will be plenty. Video also isnt much of a big for me, i dont plan on going into video to any great extent. lens wise, Id probably pick up a 50 1.4 G or something to get me by until i can start working on the trinity!

Thanks for the advice guys, after a pretty packed july shooting wise ill get to work on putting numbers in the right place to switch!
