I have been running this backwards and forwards in my head after trying a friends Nikon D300. Do I switch to the dark side?

I have always been a Canon person but the D300 has blown my mind:cuckoo:????

I currently own a Canon EOS 30D, 40D and battery grip and a large range of lenses from 10mm upto 300mm.

What do I do?

Sell all the Canon equipment and buy either a D300 or D700 or just continue using my Canon gear.

I just can't make up my mind?:bang:

Well which do you prefer to use?

Do you feel that using Canon gear restricts your photography?

If not, then why change?

Get the best out of what you have first, that is what I am aiming for before I buy anything else........:D....Long way to go before some smartass says it.......

You could do a swap with Monkey - he wants to go from a D300 > Canon!

My mates D300 just felt great in the hand. :help:

It felt balanced and sturdy more so than my 40D.

Then IQ seems to be about the same as the 40D

It was also a lot quiter than both my 30D and 40D?

I love my Canon cameras but the D300 just seemed so right.

SDB123 do you know exactly what Monkey is willing to swap?

If you like the D300, try your best not to have a play with a D700. ;) :D

Personally I dont see the point as you have quite a lot invested in Canon gear, its going to be a rather large loss I would imagine on the gear you have to sell. Still its your choice. But I agree with Frac if its going to improve your photography then go for it...........if not then stick with what you have and spend the extra cash on some decent lens.

That's good advice - had a play with a D700 at the weekend. Absolutely wonderful bit of kit!

I had a D300 last year (overkill for my needs and ability) and I have to agree with the OP, it is just so tactile...it just feels great in the hands and the ergonomics are spot on.

The swap will not just be for the body but for glass too.

Can you get just as good glass in Nikon mount? What would it cost you to do this?

Consider you said that IQ was as good as the same - and potentially you could be spending a lot of money on lenses - do you still want to swap?

I know the feeling, Ive been looking at the Nikon D3 and D700 recently, Its just the glass that bothers me. 400mm lens is a must for aviation, and the nikon 80-400 just dosent seem as fast as the Canon 100-400 L.
Dean:)

actually! The Pentax Super ME is one of my favourite cameras!

Would still have mine if it hadn't been nicked. :'(

As for the swap, I'd not bother personally.

I'd base a decision on a system to start with on ergonomics if all else was equal. In my opinion, it's not enough to warrant the cost of the lens swapping if you can get the goods with what you have.

What to do, what to do?

Stuff the D300, everyone knows medium format is where it's at right now. Sell all your Canon gear and by a Mamiya, a big tripod to put it on and a film scanner!

Or the supremely expensive but oh so good 200-400....................Sorry :p

I've not regreted changing from Canon To Nikon :)

Mark, How is the Sigma 120-300 going mate ?

Thing is - when Canon produce their next range of bodies, are you going to want to change again?

I don't think that if I swapped for Nikon I would change back to Canon.
Over the years I've had a Canon AE1, 1000F, 1000FN, 1, 2 x 50E, 350D, 400D, 30D & finally the 40D and tend to stick with one brand.
However, when using the EOS 1 I tried the Nikon F5 and nealy swapped then after deciding that the F5 just felt more comfortable and solid but only stopped when I couldn't sell my EOS1 to raise funds for the F5.
The Nikon D300 just felt so comfortable so if I swapped over I know now that I just wouldn't go back.

Lovely, we have been out to Martin mere a few times recently and while I have used the 500 mostly I used the 120-300 for several shots in the hide where the Whoopers were closest......still a little short but the focusing was quick, and it felt nice in the hand though I wouldn`t wan`t to hand hold it for to long ;).
It`ll get its real test when we visit the loop over easter......if you are still up for shaperoning us it would be greatly appreciated :D

Personally I think you're wasting your time thinking about a change. You'd get a far bigger improvement in your photography if you invested in better lenses rather than worrying about the body. And remember that the best lens in your collection by far - the Canon 70-200mm f/4 L - has nothing even remotely similar available for the Nikon mount.

i'd suggest that you try some of Canon's top end cameras first. changing brands is an expensive business and with a lot of money invested in lenses, you might be better off investing in something like the 5DII. if that doesn't float your boat like the D300 then you have a rather expensive dilemma.

The only advice I can give you here is to follow your heart, if you feel you would be happier with the D300 then it would be worth a go, but just have a longer play with one to make sure its what you want to do!

With any passion or hobby, if your unhappy with the gear you are using it will affect your performance, and remove a little bit of interest!
