These hollow bricks were to be built into new houses by developers and was mentioned on here, maybe 18 months ago. Sadly, what's happened now is that the lobbyists for the industry have nobbled the government ..Steve Reed ..and the scheme has been abandoned as mandatory. The cost was £35 per house. In opposition, Labour had backed the scheme.
This is what was written in the federation magazine.. "We stopped that...why ?. Because we recognised that if swift bricks were mandated,solutions like bat boxes or hedgehog highways would be next."
Even Baroness Young of Old Scone, former head of the RSPB, voted against a Lords amendment mandating swift bricks in new-builds.
For every 10 swifts in British skies in 1995 there are thought to be two, now. There are fears , that the 40,000 or so breeding pairs here last summer ,will be reduced to 20,000 next summer.
There's a call for 'Swifties' to unite and get this overturned.
