Swapping sides

Some pros especially the bigger agencies are not given the choice. A lot of European Agencies moved to Nikon based on the Canon Mark III issues, whilst others moved to Canon for the range of glass - they simply supply the staff with the kit and say get on with it.

I for one have lost my way with kit over the last few months, but I have been giving up a lot of pro spec work as I seem to do more and more retail so my decisions have been based solely on that, not swapping for the sake of it.

Funnily enough, I am now sans camera and will be taking my mates 5D to the lakes in four weeks time, so that will be interesting as it is a great camera that I hope to make sing.
 
To defend my recent defection to Nikon from Olympus:

The big issues with Oympus for me were the 4:3 sensor; moving to a D40 has only gained me a 1.5x sensor, but still bigger than a 4:3. Costs wise, outlay for Nikon gear is a lot less than Oly, and in the long run it should save me a fair bit. Finally was the availability of accessories. The Olympus E-420 had a very limited selection, and that's when you could even find them to buy. Add to this cheaper batteries etc and the choice was clear to me.

All in I'm pleased I went to Nikon, and would defend my choice til I'm blue in the face. It wasn't a decision spurred on my gear-envy, it was a decision made to make my life easier in the long run.

You have researched your choice and TBH it needs no defending. :)

You were having difficulties with your old system and that will always be the trigger to looking at what is available, just as it did when I went from Olympus to Canon all those years ago.

I would not consider moving from canon to anything else, I don't think any other system will do anythihg better than what I have so I see no point, there all black boxes that record a image.:D
 
i think its stupid when people spend thousands of pounds and years of loyalty and then change, i have nothing against any other brand either and its silly to sell off equipment that cost thousands of pounds for a few pence only to afford a camera eg. 5dII and a kit lens.

To be honest Ali, I think Oly are the underdogs. They've spent so much time developping new advances (like the 4:3 format, live view etc) that they've lost touch with what the mass-market wants/needs. The only company I can compare them too is Nintendo; cracking, well thought out ideas, and a good end product...that's not appealing to the masses :lol:
 
I know Chris, I used to work for them :)

Brilliant products that are so hard to sell. They took the wrong path 10 years ago when they thought that DSLR's were not where it was going to be but compacts were. There is so little profit in compacts and the marketplace is so crowded it's hard for them to compete at all.

When they did get back to DSLR's they did the mad E1 thing!

If only they did a digital OM10.........Those Zukio lenses are still fab.

To clarify my earlier post as its seems some people really don't know anything about me. I found this was a silly, perhaps badly worded post. Some people do need the high ISO of a d700. Maybe some don't but having that option will allow them to play with more things than not. I really hated the thing about sheep mentality. So what if you're not knocking the spots of those guys. If you're standing in a dark room or in a dark alley way and you have 2 cameras to chose from, one with ISO1600 max or one with ISO6400 max you're going to choose the 6400 because you will get better photo.

That said I'm not going to tell everyone to buy a D700. I know why its a better camera than the D90 but if someone is just starting out I'm going to suggest they save money on the body and spend it on the glass. Get a good understanding of photography and upgrade the body when you feel limited. The glass will still be damn good when you do.

To think that I'm a gear head is hilarious. Ask Edinburger Gary how many times I've threatend to hit him for buying new gear. I purposefully avoided Focus because I hate the idea that what I have is rubbish and that I need a new bit of kit. I only ever upgrade when I feel limited by my current gear. For what I do the D700 was the perfect choice and I wouldn't go back to Canon. Sure they do the same thing and produce very similar images but there are features on the D700 that I can't live without now. Personally speaking the d700, imho, is the best all round value for money camera out there. Its easy to see that people would want it. I'm perfectly happy to admit that my photography is better for the switch. I really can see a leap in quality since November.

The post was not aimed at you, I thought I'd made that quite clear in my response to Russell.

It was aimed at those people (not one is particular) constantly posting threads of "Should I throw away thousands of pounds worth of gear before I even bother to work out if I need it" The folks who want the word "Nikon" on ther camera strap because thay are the percieved brand of choice at the moment, just as Canon were a few years ago. Never mind the fact that they can't get the best out of the camera they have at the moment!

That, my dear chap, is neither badly worded nor silly. Chill Pete. :)

I ignore Russels posts like they are aids :p I did quote a lot more than that though. I did say a lot more too and I think I agreed with you on this little point.
 
Well I can go off to "The Real Camera Company" to drop the hassy off for it's service safe in the knowledge that we agree :)

I'm leaving my bank cards behind, they do sell real cameras in there, ones with Hasselblad and Leica on them. :D

Couldn't you just lick a Leica M6 or is that just me?..........:coat:
