About an hour or so ago, was just looking out of my office window in Meanwood. When to my great suprise:eek: I had the good fortune to be able to watch a Red Kite, circling and swooping on the updrafts. It was about 80-100 feet away. It kept this up for a good five mins then just disapeard over the building in the direction of the city centre.

Well chuffed!!!:clap::clap::clap:

It wasn't that long ago, the red kite was only found in a (very) few isolated valleys in Wales, the locations of which were not common knowledge.

Spotting one in Leeds is a very encouraging sign :thumbs:

I spotted one near my house too last week in oakwood! wonder if its the same one or the population is growing.

Could we be, not far as the Kite flys!!!

I don't get the joke. :shrug::shrug:

what's the symbolism of the kite being red?

There is a breeding population both at Harewood House and near Plumpton Rocks. often see them.

I am surprised that they are in Leeds.

Not really related to the thread, but...

A couple of years ago I was in Wester Ross (looking at a potential property purchase, it didn't happen but one day...)

I was driving along Loch Maree and caught a glimpse of something large perched atop a fence post. As I got closer it spread its wings and soared over my bonnet - it was massive. It was a sea eagle, and was literally ten feet away :eek:

If only I'd had my camera to hand.

Turns out that the month before 30 pairs had been released in that area as part of a re population scheme (bit controversial as there's claims they'd been taking sheep...they really are that big)

One day I'd like to return, but ready.

Just for the people who arnt all there yet,

They are indeed large.

Seen one twice whilst kayaking off the Outer Hebrides but not as close as your sighting.

Spotted a Red Kite at the top of Otley Chevin this afternoon which is probably about the same distance from Harewood as Meanwood is, so possibly it's not that unusual.

We have quite a few around in High Wycombe and surrounding areas - Believe there has been a breeding program for some time with obviously great success. Great birds to watch too!

We have often left a carcas of a chicken (lovely roast dinner on a Sunday!) on the roof of our shed and its there one minute and gone the next!

From the sound of it the kites are doing well round the Leeds area. Now if we could just have some big chuffing eagles as well!!!

I've saw them at Didcot whilst at the Great Western Railway Centre, not close enough to photograph unfortunately.

There's one that lives near Junc 14 of the M4. I see it circling most mornings.

There's quite a few around Swindon, one pair by Junc 15, another pair towards the A417/A419
