Suprise trip - where to go

Morning folks,

looking for some ideas and wondered if you could help me out :shrug:

My daughter is finishing her GSCE exams next year and is really into wildlife / nature photography. i am looking to take her away (she doesn't know it yet) for up to a week next summer when she finishes.

Question is where would be good - any ideas

I thought about

1. Shetlands
2. WWT centres throughout UK
3. Gigrin

Any ideas would be great

Isle of Mull? Golden eagles, White tailed sea eagles, merlin, hobby, hen harrier, otters, seals, red deer, dolphins, porpoise and a distillery. Perfect.

How much are you thinking of spending? give us a rough idea :shrug: Do you want something in this country or abroad?

Briony £ not impotant but I have a bit of a flying issue... like phobia so this country is what I am looking at

Safari in Kenya would be awesome but that's that one out !

What a shame :thumbsdown: how about go to the Shetland Isles then to see the migrating Killer Whales off the coast of Scotland (I have always wanted to do this and they do week ends not sure of the cost though) that would be in June, or go to Donna Nook to see the baby seals being born in November.

Some nice centres around U.K. if wanting to do day trips. :thumbs:

Thank you - yeah safari would have been mint but hey ho, however whales would be mighty nice too. We have been to donna Nook and that is a great spectacle as well.

Mull is fantastic. Also you could visit Iona, and take a trip out to Staffa. We went there one May and the puffins on Staffa were completely tame and came right up to us. Not sure what it would be like later in the summer, though.
 
Yopu really need to pick somewhere that can virtually guarantee something to shoot, else it could be a trip with a lot of waiting around, with not much to see. Check out some sites of gannnet colonies for example.
 
I'm slightly biased:p but Shetland in June/July is great for wildlife. Guaranteed close encounters with Gannets, loads of Puffins, Terns, Skuas, Red throated divers easily seen. Good chances of Otter sightings - dedicated tours available (book early!) Killer whales fairly regularly sighted - still have to be lucky though.

Weather may be great, or terrible, or a bit of both:D

Another vote for Shetland, its an amazing place, but plenty of rain lol......Gigrin is a very impressive spectable, but only lasts for a couple of hours each day.
 
You could also pick the furthest point and a couple of others - so, if Shetland (for example) is the furthest away for you, you could pick a great place for your interests on the way and spend a night there plus another on the way back. That would break up the trip and provide a real change of
scenery/environment.

I'm also kind of thinking (dependant on how your daughter is) about involving her kind of early on and making the decision making process a bit of a dual collaboration. I love the planning of the trip as much as anything else and it could also help her have something to look forward to after all that work - AND, if you are anything like my parents were when I was studying, you can use it as a way to get her to knuckle down and do the work....mind you, I needed that as your daughter may not so much!
 
I agree with Sam, if your going for a week and its going to be in the british isles dont make it one location. Have a open and flexible plan of two to three locations over the week and mix it up a bit. I cant give you any advice on the best places to go, but I would do my research and plan at least three different locations with only a outline plan of time spent at each location. So if you like where you are you can extend for 24 hrs and if not move on to your next destination. Hope that all makes sense.

My daughter is only just over two and half, but I look forward to planning trips like you are, what ever you do , enjoy and have fun.
 
Harris and Lewis are fantastic. Stunning and weird scenery, lots of beasties. Great. The Harris Hotel in Tarbert is super - their breakfasts are amazing.
