To be fair the State payment system makes doing one days work really not worth the trouble. I have posted before about how peoples payments are just stopped until the DWP have sorted things out. This is often weeks and sometimes even months.
 
Cash in hand, it's a non-issue. Is he likely to declare income from begging?
 
Not days but months, in fact maybe years, lost track of how long he’s been a regular at the doors, not too skint to be smoking and using a mobile phone, and be in a local bar after 8pm.
