Tovarichi!

Anyone got any got tips on where in the UK I can pick up some FED gear?

Don't point me at ebay, I know only too well the gopniki who hang out there...

On the subject of FED, anyone got any experience of these - tips, tricks and models to have/avoid?

I do know its all shocking poor stuff, but thats fine - perfect for what I want believe me

По-моему, это полная чушь

I think I said you might be wrong ;-)

Your defence is acceptable, you are found not guilty by this Peoples Court :D

To expand on what I want to do with these is I actually want to recreate Soviet style photographs taken by ordinary comrades - nothing more and nothing less. To make photos look like the originals I need the original gear, simples (as Tovarich Aleksandr Orlov would say)

Probably the most useful round up of FED models from a photographer's (as opposed to a collector's) point of view, IMHO

I have a 1980s Fed 5B and it's a rather solid, agricultural creature. I'm tempted to look for a good Fed 2 or early 3, or a Zorki 3 or 4.

You'll be on the look out for some Tasma film stock.

the dreaded ebay

It's not cheap though

Thanks Rob, I will check that link out. Whilst one of the early NKVD issue ones would be nice for my collection, I really want something 80's that is a usable piece of kit.

Nick - ooooh that looks interesting! ISO32! Hmmm this retro film thing is going to take some getting used to!

Thanks for the link Andrew, that seems like a good source of kit.

I don't really want to go down the West German made camera route, I want to keep this pure in its historical nature, even if that means more rubbish photos and problems.

I bought a Fed 3b (the leverwind version) on the basis that it was a bit more recent so less time for things to go wrong, but less bulky than carrying around the usually defective or inacurate metering etc of the 4 and 5. On the whole, it wasn't a bad idea, apart from the shutter de-laminating on the first roll of film. That was cured with a couple of coats of black fabric paint, so for a purchase price of £3 and around the same for the fabric paint I've got a solid lump of a camera that I can take out in the rain and not worry

:whistling:

The shutter delaminated?!

I want the names of the wreckers who made this camera!

What would Iron Felix do? (tm)

I have a decent Zorki4 if that would be of interest.

Dave.

Was a bit of a surprise to me - all the black rubberised coating came off the second shutter roll - at one side... first clue was a big foggy mass on the negatives, second was a pile of black powder when I removed the lens

works well enough now though...

probably caused by camera being stored in capitalists centrally heated palatial accommodation :)

It would appear that comrade Groucho has more than one camera, surely this is against party rules :rules:

He is blatantly a traitor and enemy of the state :nono:

If comrade Groucho can afford two cameras then he must be a capitalist pig and dealt with accordingly. If he was a true comrade he would have distributed his camera wealth as soon as it was accumulated.

I'm afraid my russian doesn't stretch that far, but "I think you're wrong" is a generous translation - The first bit is: "In my opinion, this is fully ", the last word I don't know... but I can guess. ;)

I see where you are coming from - I spent about a year trying to take old pictures rather than recreating them. Ended up with a Radix and a short wash inbetween develop and fix on the colour side of things. Of course, you then have to be careful what you point the camera at!

Right now I have a Zorki (technically a 1, but more likely a B - just got a Leica case for it which is a better fit than the original!) that is full of Rollei Retro bw film as I type. Were I you I would ignore anything past 3 (Zorki and FED) since the only changes were to tart things up for capitalist pig-dogs to enjoy.

I mentioned this on another thread on the forum a few days ago.

If, as your avatar shows, you do wear eyeglasses, watch out for them getting scratched by the viewfinder surround on a FED.

I've had a very sensible suggestion from another FED user to glue a thin felt washer of appropriate size to prevent damage occurring.

Groucho, I have a Zenit Photosniper too... only mine is "Nikon black" - the Grenztruppen didn't like L lenses, too bourgois :D

Haha, my avatar is not me.... it is the BIG MAN!

I do like what you have done there! Thats exactly what I want to achieve and its just not possible with uber-shiny Nikon capitalist imperialist inferior modern day junk :D

In terms of subject, oh I have the subject sorted and in fact its to make the subject look older is why I want this.

This is true! Those Running Dog Atom Rocket Criminals of the Capitalist-Militarist Industrial Complex that are bent on the destruction of the Peaceful Freedom Loving photographers of the Glorious Soviet Union! (urrah!)
