Thinking about getting a super zoom (Nikon 18-200) to replace my two zooms (Nikon 16-85 and 70-300) Not really worried about losing 100mm off the long end and 2 mm of the short end but unless I am pixel peeping will I notice a difference in quality?

Most of my pics end up on Facebook or will be family snaps for the album maybe the occasional A4 sized print. Camera is a Nikon D300.

Currently whenever I go out I only tend to take one lens, less to carry then end up wishing I had the other one as well but tends to be needed in a moment when lens changing will possibly miss the pic when I wish all I could do was zoom in or out to get the picture I want.

Hi Ian,

I would say that for the use you describe the 18-200 will give perfectly good results. I no longer have that lens but was more than happy with it as a walk-around/holiday snap lens.

Hope that helps :)

The Nikon 18-200VR Lens is a very good lens, and used alongside my Sigma 10-20, this set up makes for a great holiday set up. I have had many images accepted into International Photo Salons using the Nikon 18-200VR Lens.

From what I've read the second version of the lens doesn't suffer the zoom creep, might be something worth considering.

That's the sort of thing I want it for I don't really have the time these days to get out on my own for some good photo session without the family so something I can use while walking about will be ideal.

I did have a Sigma 10-20 but never felt I used it enough to warrant it as I must of used it about once in a blue moon. 18mm is more than enough I feel for me. Have seen some pics on flickR group for the 18-200 that look stunning so hopefully I won't be disappointed.

That's the one I am looking at getting they seem to be rare second hand but are about.

i just replaced the 18-55mm and 55-200mm kit lenses with this 18-200mm, second hand first version. very pleased with optical quality. its contrast is way better than the two kit lenses and VR at Active also seems better than 18-55mm, which helps with my handheld videos.

there is no need to worry about zoom creep. at 18mm (shortest) there is no lens creep at all.

currently i am going with 18-200mm + Sigma 12-24mm and 35mm fast prime. this super zoom is in my camera most of the time. at day time, won't mind going out using only this lens.

Before I sold all my kit I had just those two lenses, tried loads of combinations but they covered just about everything for me.

On the lookout again for another 18-200VR, why oh why did I ever sell it in the first place.... :bang:

I was like that when I had 16-85 stupidly sold it then had to find another. Though now I realise its too short at the long end for what I want hence the hunt for an 18-200.
