Hi all,

I've been asked by the engineering department at work to source them a camera that can shoot proper super slo mo HD video at 300 fps minimum (preferably upto 1200 fps). Now I know nothing about video so any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
They could do with something fairly compact as they need it to be easily portable and image quality is the main thing. I'm not sure about cost but I don't think it is a major issue as the camera is needed and will be used regularly, quite probably in all weathers.

Cheers

Andy

I know the Casio EX-F1 shoots at 330/600/1200fps but as the frame rate increases, the image size decreases... think the 1200fps is something like 400x100px, so looks like super-wodescreen but at a low quality.

Do you need audio as well or just video?

You might find this of interest, especially as the company is picking up the bill.

I don't think audio is needed and in fact the Casio is the camera they have been using but its knacked.

Cheers mate but I think that might be out of budget, they're looking at upto £1000.

I may be wrong, but I think you are going to be hard pressed to find something that will shoot full HD at the frame rates you require for around a grand. This is still specialist niche market stuff.

I was involved with something similar about 10 years ago and the kit that was being used was well into the 50k mark, and that was just for standard definition. That said technology has moved on a hell of a lot since then, and has become a lot cheaper.

Anyway, good luck on your quest.

You can hire proper slow motion cameras by the hour. If you don't need to use them very often, that might be a better option than using one of the Exilim range. For professional use I think that is the way forward.

Oooh, I've been asked to research into something like this for work and that Phantom looks VERY interesting.

yeah, you should be able to get a scientific high speed camera for FAR cheaper than a phantom! Very different needs and uses (and price tags!)..

Hmmm, what would you suggest then, I need a reasonable image at 40,000fps? The Phantom v711 would probably do, but the v1610 actually hits the spec I've been asked to find (although the next issue will be file handling so I'm tempted to stay at lower res).

You'd have to speak to a scientific imaging person there I'm afraid.. I'm a mere snapper/videographer :p worked a couple of jobs where scientific cams were being used, they looked neat. One had a bog standard Nikon mount and sigma zoom lens on the front of it!

I the phantoms I'm looking (v1610 and v711) at are available as Nikon, Canon or CS mount, which is nice if I can bag a couple of suitable L primes for (me to use) them. Most of the scientific cams I have seen are either limited to very few frames (I need a couple of seconds of video), relatively low fps (1-5000) or stupid money in comparison to the phantom.
